The Powersports industry may have her fair share of headaches, but I’ll admit this one is brand new to me.

Apparently, the Philippines motorcycle market has had such an uptick in riders that they’re running out of license plates. The remaining units left on the market are in high demand – so much so, that the Department of Transportation (DOTr) has opened bids for production of the things.

Coverage from ABS-CBN News tells us that supplies “are expected to run out this June and July,” – but why is the Philippines running out of plates at all?

“The demand for motorcycles currently outpaces the available supply of license plates,” explains Land Transportation Office (LTO) Officer-in-Charge Hector Villacorta.

With the current situation threatening to affect riders across the country, new motorcycle registrations from the Philippines are now valid for 3 years, in an attempt to streamline the supply chain.

In the meantime, should Trojan-Tonnjes Philippines Inc Joint Venture win the bid for the production of license plates, they’ll be responsible for 11.5 million blank plates, including “the supply of RFID stickers, hot stamping foil, thermal transfer ribbons, carton boxes, and plastic bags.”

“Initial delivery of 1.65 million pieces is expected within 90 days from the company’s receipt of the ‘Notice to Proceed,’” finishes the coverage.

Do you think we will ever run out of license plates?
