Return to the Land of the Dragon...again....2017

I had no idea that "I" highways could be toll roads.
I thought they were all part of the interstate system???
Obviously you now realize I don't get out much.

Yea, they built a new Northbound I-65 bridge over the Ohio river, rebuilt/replaced the deck of the Southbound I-65 and tolled them with approval from the Feds. The east end bridge is not an actual interstate bridge-they made the road which connects to both sides a part of the state highway system so they could have a walking path on it (yikes) but it connects both sides of the I-265 Interstate (called the Lee Hamilton in Indiana and the Gene Snyder in Louisville). Cost $2 to cross the toll bridges each way if you have a Riverlink Ipass or an Eazy Pass transponder; $4 if you don't (you get mailed a bill/ticket). The East end bridge is called the Lewis and Clark and it is also tolled.

Do you have any idea if the I-Pass used on Illinois toll roads is accepted on the Ohio River bridges?

Is anyone riding up from the Atlanta area Wednesday evening or Thursday morning? I will be visiting my sister in the Emory University area and then riding up from there.

iam going to leave around 14:00 for North of ATL on Thursday. I could meet you in Ellijay, GA around 14:30 to 14:35 if you like. I dont know if that is too late. Arrive up there around 16:00. I go up there all the time, and takes me just a little over 2 hours from my house.. let me know

I managed to get the 19th off, but not the 18th (new job, no PTO for 1st 90 days). If I leave home by 8am as I plan, I'll be there about 1:30pm local time.

A friend from the ADV forum highly recommends Winding Stairs Road, Topton, NC and N. River Rd past Bald River Falls.

I hope I have time to try both.
Let's do those on our Saturday DualSport Ride.
I have a route planned:
1. Winding Stairs
2. 711
3. Wayah Bald
Lunch in Andrews
4. Little Snowbird (the Gravel Dragon)
5. Cherohala Pkwy
6. N. River Rd to Bald River Falls
7. Return or continue onto Telico Plains depending on progress

Who's coming?

Sounds good, but I'm rockin Pilot Road 4 tires on my NC. I'm slightly concerned about uphill and downhill on the loose stuff.

I am SO in, but I do want you guys to know I am not experienced off road and will most likely have to go slower than the rest (in spite of my bike). I don't want to affect anyone's enjoyment.

No problem. It's not a race and we certainly don't want anyone to crash. Ride your own ride at the level you feel comfortable, on pavement or gravel. I'm just glad to have you coming along.

Besides having a wonderful time, I'm also looking forward to riding off road with people who are more experienced. I know it will help me advance my skills just by observing.

+1
It is not a route I plan to challenge anyone and we can adjust the route en route depending on how everyone likes.
As it is the gravel portions are mostly well maintained, as I've ridden most of it last month; and with no rain forcast,
all we have to worry about is how much dust gets kicked up.
There is plenty to ride, even on road tires.

I'm coming up with 2 guys on ST1300s and a third on a GS. We probably would have to take a pass on the gravel roads this trip.

We are passing on the "off road" part also.

"Off road" really just means off pavement. The route will still be roads, as I understand it, and I'll bet they're smoother that the paved state highways I rode last weekend around Dubuque, Iowa. (Hate the roads up north). The main grief with gravel is just the dust kicked up when you have a group.

BTW, as of today here is the Stecoah forecast:

My current plan plan is to arrive Tuesday evening. Riding in that area is SO much better than what I have at home that I want to get as much riding in as possible.

I understand.
1. My boys have zero (Well, we rode a pocked "dirt road" last year for a couple of miles at slow speeds) experience on dirt/gravel/"off road".
2. The NC suspension is really not that good.
3. We have street tires.
4. We are going to stick to "pavement".

Love the weather report.
Hope it holds.
Last year there were lots of little rain cells that went through here and there and we dodged every one of them.
Fingers crossed.
