Kickstand Ten, In the Land of the Dragon, NC Meet Up Event

We (the two boys and I) will probably do the Dragon first thing on Friday, so sure. Don't want to slow anyone down though. We tend to do that since we never have to turn and lean at the same time in FL.

See you guys when you get there...have a safe trip up thru Floristan and Georgia...

Dont ever feel bad for taking your time on something like the Dragon. It is a very technical ride, and I take my time. There are pull offs so others can go around and a stopping place at both ends where anyone with you can wait.

Cherohala, to me, is a lot more fun with wider sweeping curves and chances to actually look at the vistas. At least for me, I am rarely looking at anything outside the next 100 feet of road or through the turn.

I like the Dragon on Thursday, considering the lack of traffic from Friday on.

I’ll do the Dragon with you on Friday and you won’t have to slow down to ride with me. I’ll be on a 250 dual sport with 50-50 tires and with lesser street handling capabilities than the NC.

Was just looking at the weather, and Thursday does look to have some rain coming into the area. Of course, in that area there is a 50/50 shot for rain at any time, regardless of forecast.

The Tail of the Dragon has the best PR of any road anywhere. For my money 28 getting to Deals Gap is a better ride. Do it Friday and if possible early. It will be crowded enough to be dangerous by mid day Saturday.

I agree. Beyond the few hundred feet ahead of you there isn’t much to see and it is pretty technical at times. I did come around one sharp curve and surprise a bear cub in the middle of the road. That was the highlight of my run. And weekdays early are the most stress-free. Friday and into the weekend things start picking as the nut jobs arrive for their own personal “time trials”. Watch your mirrors, you have as much chance of being badly surprised and run over from the rear as you do from the front. A lot of very scenic rides around there once you’ve done the Dragon and got your picture taken

We feel obligated to do the Dragon after all...
We agree taking 28 is wonderful.
Also taking 28 to Franklin.
All of it is so nice coming from flat Florida.
Can't wait.

If you go south on 28, go all the way to Highlands. neat waterfalls and some pretty good curves. Ride back up to Franklin, the go Wayah road. Look out for gravel in the curves. Ride up to the fire tower at the top of the hill.

Finally planning to attend this gathering since getting my NC in 2017! Arriving on Friday. Plan on doing Wayah Rd and Cherohala on Saturday. Would like to hook up with anyone doing the same, or either one, who rides a smooth, moderate pace. Any more than that and you'll drop me like so much hot coals :).
Looking forward to meeting this group!

No problem Bob.
Many like to go to gravel so often we end up alone.
Wayha road is nice.
Have not gone south of Franklin. Will look into it. Maybe because it made the day too long??

This will be my third KSL, having missed #9 last year.
Looking forward to another round of motorcycle therapy.

Don't wait too long to come over to the "gravel" side as the good ones are disappearing faster than grandma's cookies.
If they don't gate/block them they pave'm :(

No Dragon discussion is complete without a photo! Here is me running the Honda through the Tail of the Dragon twisties on Sunday morning last year. I’m keeping it between the lines! (Yes, I was too cheap to actually purchase the photo).

Done the Cherohala many times over the years, never get tired of it. Only did Wayah Rd once, many years ago, by accident (was a great wrong turn)! May opt for Wayah and put together a loop around 64, or into TN on 68 to Tellico, then cross over the Cherohala. That'll be a long day. Depends what time I roll out of the tent.

711 is half road half potholes with broken asphalt all over.
Good section to test your suspension :)

I’m over in the Cherokee forest riding forest roads for a few days. I’ll see some of you at Kickstand in Thursday. Safe travels!
