Replacing chain and sprockets; go cheap or go Honda?

Maybe it was my fault, my chain my not have been perfectly aligned or something, but I've lost the clip 3 separate times, luckily I didn't drop my chain or run into any kind of trouble. I prefer the rivet type

Many thousands of miles on chains with clip style master links and never a lost one. On the 700 I take a smear of RTV over the clip to glue it in place yet easily removed.

I kind of figured this bike/motor wouldn’t pose a problem with using clips. Just curious to see some thoughts on it.

I'm about to change chain & sprockets now at 23k miles. The parts are on my workbench and I only have to borrow the staking tool from a friend.

I pondered the master link vs endless chain and came to the conclusion that I wasn't going to remove the chain for cleaning - as you would on a dirt bike - so why bother?

when you refer to "endless" do you mean one that comes as a circle, or do you mean a rivet type master link?

Not many people buy an endless chain because most people don't like removing the swingarm to install them. Probably not a bad idea to pull the swingarm in order to lube up the linkage, pivot, etc though.

Hi guys, sorry for somewhat reviving a dead thread...

I just wanted to know, how do I tell if my bike has the oem chain and sprockets?

I bought it at about 40k kms and they're due for replacement soon, so I'm trying to get a rough idea of what kind of mileage I can get with the oem setup.

Obviously the setup must have been replaced at least once already, just checking for information sake.

It will not be easy to tell if your chain is OEM type or not. The chains Honda uses still have the supplier’s markings on them; they are not specially marked for Honda. Look at the stampings on the chain links. I know one chain Honda used was RK. I’m pretty sure one they never used is DID. I think all the OEM chains will be black, so if you have a gold chain it is likely aftermarket.

Depends on the year ........

Example
2012 shows RK and DID as the OEM chains
2015 shows RK and DIADO as the OEM chains

OEM chain (the ones on my bikes at least) looked very much like an 'endless' chain. Every replacement I've ever seen or had either has a clip-type master link, or riveted by the type that flares the hollowed-out end of the pins. Both of those look quite distinct and easily and quickly identified.
FWIW.

Man...is it just me or has the replacement chains shot up in price..?? Yikes! :{

I've oiled it so much there is no visible wear to either sprocket, but the chain is out too far to adjust anymore since i added the 17T/39T. ...time for a new chain! :{)

Look the same to me except D.I.D. didn't have the VX3 Last time I bought a chain it was VX2, same price though

Honda NC700 DCT Sprockets & Chain Kit (choose chain / choose sizes) | SprocketCenter.com

For the kit

DID Chain 520 VX3 X'ring Chain - GOLD or STEEL color (choose length)

Just the chain

I've felt like chains have always been expensive, when they last a long time it's not so bad, I didn't align my rear tire properly after installing a new chain (installed after work in the dark) and 400 miles later the chain was already messed up, replaced it after 6,000 miles [emoji37] I usually get 25,000 plus out of my DID VX2 chain, hopefully the VX3 is even better

The gauge is reading 16K but corrected that is about 17,800 miles. It is all the way out and i have no more adjustment left in it with the current 17T/39T sprockets. I could swap the 43T back on and adjust it with that giving me some life left in it, but i don't care to revert back to the 43T. I like the power/mpg i get with the current set-up, so a new chain is ordered and on it's way. :{)

Just looked up my chain, new 6,000 miles ago, has not needed adjustment yet. Rode it on wet roads a few weeks ago, started squeaking. First time I've lubed the chain. This seems exceptional to me. This is what I bought in a set with both sprockets from Sprocket Center in 2017 for $125 delivered:
DID 520VX2 - NATURAL X'ring (750cc rated)

Chain tension check and adjust at 4000-8000 miles is a common.

It’s hard to tell your service interval on chain lube from your post........but..........( pre ride check) chain inspection and lube is usually done about every 500 miles. Just a thought that waiting until it squeaks is waiting too long.

First time I lubed it was a few weeks ago. So about 5,500 miles. I often check the chain, because of the OEM chain that stretched like crazy.

If your NC is a DCT then it would be different, but they have that also

I'm not affiliated at all, just a satisfied customer

P.s. With my standard I've gone up 1 tooth on the front sprocket to slightly reduce the rpms at freeway speeds (99% of my riding)

Hi @rippin209 - just want to check in to see if you are still happy with your order from Sprocket Center? I am thinking about ordering the basic steel sprocket kit with a DID 520VX3 in "natural" (ooo, natural!). Because Gold is the worst. (Sorry, not sorry).
