Supposed to be in the mid-80s and humid in greater Chicagoland. Rain/storms north of the city, but southside looks clear.

I will likely ride to one of the local high schools were I coach saber fencing and beat teenagers with 3' metal sticks, then ride home with a smile. New season, so a new crop of teens who think they know everything. Just like prior years with new students, they will get beaten up by an old arthritic man while they learn humility.
Humility is good. [emoji4]

Man, what a great job that would be... oops, revealing my sadistic side, aren’t I?

Back when I was a wee lad I took up fencing for a couple of years. Was taught by the "old" art teacher who didn't look like he could work his way out of a wet paper bag. He handed out humility really well though... Really enjoyed the grace and explosiveness of it!!

That is the cool thing about the sport. We have guys much older than me at the club who can beat the snot out of me. Its a sport of form and skill, as much as a sport of athleticism. And while the young have physical advantages in strength and endurance, only the young who seriously train have the skills. I was in the right place a year ago and picked up a 16 year old Russian student who is on her way to possibly making the 2024 Olympic team. She has been traveling with my family, been to both coasts and many places in between with me as her side coach. She was ranked #7 in Russia in women's saber when she left. She is in the top 50-60 in the USA right now and getting better. She moved to Boston a few months ago to get into a better club, but she still travels with my family. Last week we were at Notre Dame, they are heavily recruiting her. Coach took her down to the sideline for the kickoff, sent her to classes during the day, etc. Gave my wife and I tickets to the ND-Virginia game. Basically got treated like royalty on campus.

Well it is a tough job, but someone has to step up and beat kids with sticks!

I coached high school wrestling for many years....I just beat them with my hands.Sure made an old man feel good. I don't think they allow the coaches to work out with the kids anymore.

Honestly I don't know about other sports but in Fencing it is pretty much necessary to hit the kids with metal sticks. I know of no school program in the midwest where the coaches do not work out directly with the students.

In fact its generally considered a reward to the kid if the coach allows them to actually have a real bout, as opposed to just training and practice.

Sounds a lot like squash. I played against an older lady, had maybe 20 years on me. With my ego I had beaten her already before the game started. By the time the game was done as a contest, she had beaten this 30 year old male to a pulp, hardly breaking a sweat.

She gave me a few pointers and I beat her in the next two sets, but by that time we were only playing because she wanted more of a workout

Heh, that's funny. My first wife was into fencing when we first started dating i laughed at her about it. She took that from me for about a year, then after we were married she whipped me around like a red headed step child! I mean she handed me my hat more then once. I was unable to even get a touch on her and she whipped me every time, badly. I was 6'6" 250 and stout to say the least, i worked 12 hours shifts at a truck stop in their tire shop busting bug heavy truck tires all day long, every day. She was only 5'6" and 125 soaking wet! Man did i get schooled by her. I quickly learned a whole new respect for her and the sport! So, all of that to say... My hat is off to those of you that can do that and are good at it. :{)

Now back to our regularly scheduled program... It was 27f this morning so i brushed off the ice and rode to work. On my way home it was a warm/sunny 47f. :{)

Good to know your limitations;)

I took the 700 out this evening after dinner. 78 degrees and a tad less humidity than that of late. I have a 40 mile loop I do on evenings like this and halfway through I came up behind a Honda Rune. It was only the second one I've ever seen in the wild. Beautiful sunset.

Those are cool, unique bikes! I wouldn't have one but they are cool for what they are and I enjoy looking at them. I saw 3 of them riding together one time not far from where I work, no idea where they were from, passed by and saw them turning into a gas station. I was in my truck with my wife and remember saying hey there's a Rune! Wait there's another! Wait all 3 are Runes! Figured that was about like finding a 5 or 6 leaf clover.

i've never seen one nor have i even heard of one(they must not like the cold/snow). I had to look them up, sweet looking bike. Although i don't believe i'd ever have one they are kind of cool looking.

Some of that "new concept" stuff Honda tends to pull with designs here and there. Lol. They ain't cheap either. Well, they may be now, but were pretty pricey when they came out. $25k-ish.

Hot humid ride through traffic on the way to fencing practice. Took a more rural route home, humidity was much lower and the temps had dropped at least 10 degrees. Made for a great ride home this evening.

Today, I removed a Michelin PR4 rear tire and installed a Shinko Raven R009. I put a Shinko Raven front on over 10,000 miles ago and it’s still going strong. I loved the quick turn in and great handling of the Shinko front, so I’m anxious to try it out with a new matching rear tire. I think I paid $75 for the rear tire with free shipping.

One requirement I now have for tires is that there must be tread at the centerline. I’m tired of thinking I have rubber left, the off-center wear bars are good, and the next thing I see is centerline cord showing. The Ravens meet my requirement for center tread, unlike Conti Motions, or the OEM Metzeler Z8.

This rim is the only only one in my fleet where the heavy spot is actually at the valve stem. On all other rims I have checked, the heavy spot is nowhere near the valve.

Haha! Wow that's crazy. Our temp right now (1:25pm) is 97f with heat index over 100f. We should be in the 80's at least come the weekend. Maybe even the 50's at night! Woohoo!!! :) The mornings have been nice in the low 70's for riding, but the afternoons have still just been unreal for this time of year.

Yeah, it's terrible anywhere near us. Hit 99 today (right now) with the heat index (94 true). 80 by Friday, 70s by Sunday and for the next week. Too bad I will be working in Houston next week...

We're gonna blink and be into winter with no fall to speak of...

Here’s why I’m going riding next week: 60s F in Arkansas starting Sunday! I hope today is the last day I see anything over 80*F until June, 2020.
