Question Dies when Shifting Into Gear

Starts & runs fine. I shift into 1st or 2nd & it dies. I just rode this bike 2 days ago. Why would putting it in gear kill the engine today but not Sunday? Side stand & center stand were both up when I did this. It's a 2014 Honda NC700X manual. Thinking the side stand switch may have failed. Maybe it thinks the side stand is still down when I shift into gear? Just guessing.

What happens if you start it in gear? I always do; I never start it in neutral. First gear engaged, clutch lever in, sidestand up.

That worked. I started it in 1st gear, then 2nd. That's good news. I've got today or tomorrow to get my bike inspected or get a ticket.

I think I'll do the same mod I did on my Vstrom 13 years ago. Strip the 2 wires to the lawyer switch on the side stand & solder them together. I don't remember what the problem was but I remember that fixed it. Maybe the same thing.

I consider the sidestand switch a way to minimize the chance I’ll crash hard on that first left turn. I would never disable the sidestand switches on my bikes. That switch on the Hondas is also used for reading the MIL trouble codes.

FYI, instead of permanently modifying the wires, you can do like I did and use a short piece of bare copper wire with each end shoved into the plug for the kickstand switch, then tape it up so it doesn't come out. This closes the circuit and makes it think the kickstand is always up. I had to do it because I accidentally broke the switch when I was replacing my kickstand. Don't need it anyway, it's engrained in me to put the kickstand up every time I get on a bike.
