We are having our foster son "transitioned" from our home. That is government talk for they are taking our baby away from us. We got him at 2 months old. He is now 16 months old. We are the only parents he know but his maternal grandmother has now been awarded custody.

So we will have time to travel again. But where to go?

We have seriously been looking at Route 66, but honestly leaving Chicago and heading southwest through Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona during the dog days of summer just seems like a stupid idea. So looking northward we are thinking maybe Nova Scotia might be a better destination, weather will be cooler, and we've never been there before.

A round trip of 3000 to 4000 miles is reasonable and both of these destinations fit into range.

Anyone have any other suggestions on where we should consider. Departure is city is near enough to Chicago to say we'd be leaving Chicago. So what round trip would you make if you were departing Chicago and heading off somewhere in mid-late August?

Is Nova Scotia even currently an option? I wasn’t aware that the Canadian border was open yet for US travelers.

Of the two, I'd choose Nova Scotia. I rode there 2 years ago and it blew my mind. It was the best trip I've ever taken. They're allowing limited travel from the US right now. I don't think tourism is included and the moment, but I'm sure it's on it's way. It's just a matter of when

Having done NS, I would go Glacier National Park. Lots to see along the way, and they may not be there much longer

YES, in early July the border opens for fully vaccinated tourism.
Can you provide any citation for the source of that information? I am planning travel to Canada and have yet to see any certain declaration on border opening date.

Border opens July 5th only for vaccinated citizens and residents of Canada. Some speculation of more allowed July 21 as Trudeau said opening in weeks not months and updates have been happening 21 of each month.

Watching close with planned trip to Newfoundland starting mid August. Could be 3 NCs on trip. ADVRider has a thread dedicated to subject

You may want to double check that.....https://www.politico.com/news/2021/06/21/canada-us-border-reopening-july-5-vaccine-495335

Seems Canada is opening internal borders; however, still not open to foreigners (which USA is)....

"Starting July 5 right before midnight, Canada will allow fully vaccinated travelers — who already have the right to enter the country" if you didnt have the right before July 5th, you still dont have the right....
" the U.S. border is unlikely to reopen fully until 75 percent of eligible Canadians have been fully vaccinated. More than 75 percent of eligible Canadians have received one shot while more than 20 percent have received two shots."
"There's no other way to say it: another month's delay is bullshit," Rep. Brian Higgins (D-N.Y.),

HERE, not sure if this is a province by province thing or not. Not all travel qualifies. Not all people qualify. In looking it over, there appears to be a possible path, though condo ownership in Canada, that we may be able to qualify to get in, if that can be confirmed, once we are are across the border then we are good.

Strong recommend for NS (biased as I live here).
Cabot Trail in Cape Breton is routinely near the top of all "Best Motorcycle Rides" lists. Plenty of other great rides too.
NS Tourism Department has some limited info: https://www.novascotia.com/travel-info/getting-around/motorcycle
If you have any specific questions I may be able to help.

Here's how to find out if you can enter Canada:

from that website:
Foreign nationals (including U.S. citizens) coming to Canada for non-essential reasons will be turned away at the border.

Took the quiz and got this as one of the answers:
You cannot enter Canada for optional reasons, such as:

  • spending time at a seasonal home or cottage
  • childcare for your relatives
  • a personal or casual visit
  • tourism, fishing, entertainment or leisure

Excuse me Canada, but riding is extremely essential

If it were me, and I had 4,000 miles to burn, I would make a bee line to the Rockys or the Appalachians and use up every one of the remaining miles carving every canyon I could find. Maybe, W. Virginia, W. NC…..or Steamboat, Crested Butte, Million $ highway.

Crossing borders during these times of COVID and D variant is risky business. I don’t trust the politicians.

Looks like Nova Scotia is NOT possible at this time.

I was reading the details about Canadian travel. They are relaxing SOME rules, but the border still appears to be closed to tourists. PERIOD. We would probably be traveling in mid-to-late August so maybe the border crossing will be open at that time? But that is anyone's guess.

I'm hearing great things about motorcycle riding in Nova Scotia so this is sort of depressing that it is still closed off. We are looking at many different alternatives, one of which includes riding to Maine, and having a PLAN B just in case the Canadian border opens in August for tourism.

Anyone have an ideas on a motorcycle trip that does NOT involve high heat or high humidity travel in August?
We'd be departing from the greater Chicagoland area, and are looking for a 3000-to-4000 mile trip, probably 3 weeks of travel.

You've likely been there already, but there is a great loop around the south shore of L. Superior, through Duluth, right up to the Cdn border.
I am hopeful the border will be open by the time you are ready to travel.
In that case, cross up to Thunder Bay, continue on in NW Ontario.
Then back to Lake of the Woods.
Return to MN through Ontario or Manitoba, and home again down through Duluth.
By mid to late August we may have a few hot days, but nights are cool and mosquitoes are almost done for the season.
