Hi all, I'm a new member and this is my first post so thank you in advance if anyone has any ideas for me on my following issue. I have a 2016 NC700x and I'm getting the dark (no back light or color) on the display, just the grey led display like on a calculator. I've checked battery connections and removed the pin connector from dash/display and sprayed it with electrical cleaner but no joy. Prior to this issue I was having issues with my battery but I've installed a new battery and I'm using a tender, and even starting the bike with green full charge tender light I get the dark display. ***When I was having battery issues I would ride to work with no issues and then when I went to start the bike at the end of the day it would have the dark screen. No MIL blinking in neutral with stand down. All other electrical seems to be working fine... bike starts easily, horn, blinkers headlight all work great. I feel like if the dash/display was bad or had a blown fuse it wouldn't work at all but I'm not sure what to try next? I could probably buy a used dash on e-bay for what the local Honda dealer will charge to diagnose.

Sorry that I can't help you with this problem, There are some smart members that can probably help you.

Anyhow......Welcome to the forum.

The combination meter has two connections to the power source: power input line switched on by the ignition switch and back-up voltage line. The back-up line feeds the meter's internal clock directly from a power source through a fuse. The power input line supplies power to all internal components of the meter. So if one of these components is not working, it is an internal fault that is practically irreparable.
Disassembling the meter is not recommended because the factory seal will be damaged. As a result, moisture appears on the inner surface of the shield.

Welcome to the forum. Greg (670cc) has you pointed in the best direction I know of to pursue.

If it’s not simply in need of a new backlight, then I think the party’s over.
(Old song: Turn out the lights, the party’s over)

When my 2012 was 2years old my dash did the same thing. All inputs to the meter were good the only fix would be to replace the meter. Honda would only pay for the labor and not the part. I have lived with it since and other than a time or two its been good. Kind of lost my faith in Honda for not doing the right thing. I did buy it brand new in Aug 12, "0317". That is what I get for buying a new model

#317 is one of the LATE models. Those of us with 2-digit bikes have dashes that will tolerate being partly melted by Cal-Sci windscreens and still not lose the backlight!

(P.S. In case it’s not apparent, that was intended as humor)

Thanks for trying to help guys. I've read a bunch of posts similar to mine and most end with the poster finding a battery/connection or voltage issue but I have a new battery and use a tender and have plenty of starting power. I'll probably just live with it... I can still see the read out in the daylight and at night I just count my shifts lol. Maybe I'll add a battery powered lamp above it

Electronics/electrical lighting is LED now, which are a string of bulbs soldered to circuit boards. Normally when a bulb(s) fail, the complete unit must be replaced. Incandescent/halogen bulbs are changed out individually.
The service manual has a few troubleshooting steps. Reboot is one step to take. Screens getting dark are individual led burnout, which is a crack (open) developing at one of the two solder joints.
U-tube gives many examples of simply heating the joints to liquid, which closes the circuit again, 'repairing' the light.

I replaced my TV lately because the screen was becoming dark, indicating burned out LEDs, but was not about to (attempt) to open it up. Gave it to Good Will.
My C125 Cub (all LED) has 2 aftermarket running LEDS on the forks with one of the 7 bulbs in 1 light inop. One day I will take it apart and melt the solder joints, hopefully getting the bulb back on-line.
