Hey, guys!

Just to reiterate under this topic ( I read it this morning in one of the posts)
  • the original grabrails are taken off when Honda carrier is installed. Evidently they are worth about $135 each.. Make sure your dealer gives them back to you. (Thank you for the hint, as I am getting the bags installed)

Then I started looking at the installation instructions for the side bags and noticed that the plastic needs to be cut out to accommodate the Honda side cases.... I did not know that..... Did you?

Does that mean that when you take the side cases off it will look "strange"?

Agreed. I stared at the work my dealer did and can barely see anything at all. The new rails they put in completely cover up any cutting. I did get my old rails back too. Does anyone want to buy them!?!?

The top box carrier needs cutting to I beleive.
I decided to go with givi instead at the last moment.

Ken

i hate to break this to you, but the honda boxes are made by givi. and no cutting required for the topbox. the cutting for the sidecases is very minimal, and unnoticable.

I thought the Honda requires cutting from the start. The first piece required for any Honda rear luggage or even just a bare Honda rack, is the new side rails, and that's when the cutting is required. Is that not the case?

You're correct.

I was ready to throw down money for Honda bags before I discovered you had to do cutting. I'm not shy about modifying my bikes/cars, but one wrong move with that saw/dremel and I'd be beyond ticked off!!!

Wonder why everyone but Honda figured out how to mount bag brackets/luggage racks without cutting??

The cutting is really not as bad as it sounds and the pieces and area cut is not in a critical location.

I haven't got to see any of the various bags in person but it appears from pictures the ones from Honda fit much closer than the others. I have a very narrow parking space so went with the Honda version. Hope to find out next week.

Factory bags installed. I was at the dealer from just before 8 a.m. until a bit after 6 p.m. They were complaining about how they underbid the job because it took so long. The bags themselves are pretty small and quite oddly shaped. They work fine for my 30-year-old Eagle Creek briefcase with the large pockets on the front, which fills one pretty much entirely. The front area, cut out for the passenger's legs, look like big aerobrakes and, apparently, act like them as well: mileage dropped considerably though I haven't been able to determine yet how large a role the bags played. I had the larger Honda windshield installed at the same time and was fighting quite a stiff wind on the freeway. I suspect if the overall width of the bike isn't a big factor in the decision, as it was for me, one might be happier with something else.

It took them 10 hours to install the bags? What where they trying to do chew through the plastic? It took me at most an hour to put the rack on, and that was using a dull saw. To mount the rest of the brackets should have taken about an extra 10 minutes if they took their time. It shouldn't take that long to install every honda option you can buy at the same time.

Sounds like the dimwit hack that messed up my bike a couple of months ago moved somewhere else. There's no reason why it took that long unless they took a lot of beer breaks. I'm hardly a mechanic but I got mine on in a couple of hours while helping my buddy in his shop with a couple of things he was doing.

Are you sure about that? I purchased the top case and rack (Honda Brand) and the top rack requires the sidecase mount.
