Hi guys...would appreciate any suggestion or opinions on my possible purchase of2012 nc700x dct...bike has 40k and was just serviced, according to owner...bike is set up nicely with Honda bags and trunk; new chain and sprocket: heated grips; touring shield...
This would be my first dct although I've had over 75 bikes throughout my riding career...I'm going into my 76th year.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated...BTW, he's asking $4500 for the bike.

At first thought that price seems high given the year and miles but the new and used market is crazy right now and highly fragmented geographically.

What advice are you wanting? Basically, the NC is a fine motorcycle. 40k miles is not high for this Honda model.

In my opinion, that price is way too high. These bikes are great, but not popular in the USA. Thus, they lose value quickly. In the midwest, I'd offer $3500, and it would need to be in awesome condition. The NY market may demand higher prices; I don't know.

I have that bike with the Honda bags and trunk. I bought it 3 years ago with apx. 9000 miles on it For $3500. Yes I stole it from a Harley dealership. My son bought a manual version 2012 this spring with no boxes and 36000 miles and paid $2450. Personally I love the dct. Also the paddle shifting when I deam necessary. I am 69 years old. I rode it from Houston to Destin Fla. to Lafayette La. to Destin then bak to Houston last month. Over 2000 miles. It now Has 32000 and so far other than oil and tires I have only had to replace the oxygen sensor in the air box. I love the bike. Riding to the hill country in central Texas Friday. Can’t wait. Twisted Sisters here I come.

My 2 cents would be to reasearch prices on cycle trader and craigs list to get an idea of what asking price is. Just because that is the asking price doesn't mean they are selling for that. I would agree that a bike that is 9 years old is probably worth less than half of its value.

I am going to make some assumptions that owning 75 bikes you have a fair bit of experience buying them so you have a perception of value and negotiating. Mine is 8 years old. The suspension is budget. It isn't shot but it performs at the level it was designed for. I don't think the accessories add a ton to the value. Heated grips aren't that expensive. The bags are nice but their value to me is limited in that they are primily limited to the Honda. Honda's have a reputation for being well enginneered. At 40K miles it has been used and I would expect it to go a lot further. My machine has 43K miles on it. It is non DCT and I would not entertain selling it for $1000. If it were me I would like to see the pricing with a 3 in the front. From there it all has to be what it is worth to you. Not sure how many DCT's are in you area but that may be the deciding value factor for you. The upside is that it seems like you flip bikes fast. If you get a good price on it your cost of ownership proobably won't be too high when you sell it. You may be able to sell it for close to what you paid for it making your depreciaion in the hundreds versus the thousands. At a certain point there is a minimum price that you can get any running motorycle for. In this crazy Covid environment pricing has become distorted. New supply has been restricted or delayed making inventory immdiatly available more valuable.

This is the internet and my opinion is worth exactly what you paid for it. Good luck with your search and hope your happy with wherever you end up :)

Get him down on the price and you'll probably be good to go. 40k miles on one of these bikes is not as bad as some here are making it out to be....

but that price is high nonetheless. But also, as dduelin stated, the used market is crazy for pretty much anything right now. And if it has the oem luggage accessories, that's about $1200 worth of add ons in itself. However, Anything around $3,500 or less would be much more fair for a 2012 with 40k miles on it, provided it is in good shape and has been cared for. For reference, I gave $3,800 for a 2013 NC700X dct bone stock with only 8k miles on it a little over 2 years ago. Good luck!

I agree. The market is completely out of wack from the pandemic. I did a lot of bike shopping over the pandemic. There are a couple trends.

Private sales are driven by who wants what and when and how much money exists in your area. Dallas is quite wealthy for a city. Motorcycles flow constantly from hand to hand.

In the USA, whenever there is a stimulus check, motorcycles fly off the showroom floor… then sales goes quite dead. The purchase price of an older used motorcycle is directly linked to a local population’s cash on hand. It is not so much a false market like diamonds, expensive ski equipment or fake swords or Beanie Babies.

When people don’t buy anything for a year, the dealerships will always have their price books for new bikes. You may get a small price break. But dealerships have rules to follow on prices. The older pre-owned bikes is where the deals are. These sales
compete and merge with facebook sales.

Dealerships apparently are categorized to allow certain price points for anything not used. Don’t expect a 50% off sale. It just wont happen. A new bike three years old might get you $1000 off.

Older used bikes are a toss up and can be driven by auction bidding. Sometimes it is better to buy from a non-branded dealer. But you must remember, you are buying an auction bike. Who knows why it was put up for auction.

A private seller may be honest and at least keep service records. I had to sell a 50% modified XR and that is never easy.

When times are hard, go online and see what people want nationally, then locally. Compare your model across mileage and age. Check out facebook marketplace and go from there. Walk the showroom floor once and check your notes. These days, a wise shopper only needs about 2 hours to gather enough data to say if a price is okay or not.

But know this. A bike with 40k to 50k miles will need every moving part outside the motor checked for tolerance. What is worn out is a complete toss up.

Sometimes you will find a rebuild hobbyist. You may get a totally rebuilt bike. Prices will make sense with such bikes.

Unless it is an old goldwing. With those bikes, nothing makes sense.
Save the drama …………really a totally rebuilt bike at 40k, nonsense.

Old Goldwings, St1300 touring bike are no different than NC………

Yes, I would have been in trouble with my 180,000 mile ST1300 or 192,000 mile RT listening to that. Both are still riding their happy owners around. The ST on all original engine, transmission and clutch. I did have to replace the clutch and transmission at 188,000 on the RT but the engine was original. Both ran great and still do. On the same dyno my ST1300 made more hp and torque at 150,000 miles than it did at 44,000 miles. My current RT is a youngster at 115,000 miles. They don't build them like they used to.... thank goodness.

40,000-50000 miles on a bike is nothing.....I ride hundreds of miles on the weekends on my 103,000+ mile Suzuki C50 Boulevard....was in the Smokies in May on my 60,000+ Honda NC700x.....minimum maintenance done and and parts outside of the motor are still good....jeesh...
