Stalling issue

Perhaps we can set some definitions as to what is "stalling".

Does the engine stop, quit running, yet the key is still on? If yes, when the bike stops moving and is stopped completely, does shift itself to N as it should so it can be restarted? Does it restart normally?

Or does it hesitate or stumble when starting from a stop and not respond correctly to throttle inputs yet the engine continues to run and eventually begins to accelerate?

If it sticks in second gear and refuses to shift to third, does it shift back to first gear when the bike is brought to a stop?

If it sticks in second gear and refuses to shift to third, what does it do when the throttle is held open or opened slightly as to accelerate? Does it eventually shift to third under acceleration?

I agree that the symptoms need to be described in commonly defined terms. Partial answer, from post #9, follows:

When the engine stalls, I have to restart it, and put it back into drive and go. This only happens when the engine hot. Any other time, it runs fine. The engine will hesitate when first thing in the morning when cold.

I will try and help answer these as best I can.

The stalling issue: You pull up to a light and fully stop. I believe at this point the bike is in 1st gear. Bike is idling normal. Stop light turns green.... as soon as you give it throttle it stalls. The next step is you frantically hit the start button, then the Drive button and go on your way. No sputtering or running rough. It happens without warning. There is no advance notice it may stall at all.

The second gear is only in Sport mode. When it happens Ive noticed you have two options. You can manually shift it into 3rd or totally back off on the throttle and it will sometimes then shift into third. You can tell something isnt right because the shifting light is blinking wildly for you to shift (and you just know). So the bike knows it should shift but just doesn't.

Hi All
Just got my new nc 750 dct .I now have 800 miles and 1st service done. Bike stalled around 8 times since purchased. It happens as I start either from cold or after a good run .Always after a stop .totally at random.
Bike at dealership now ...they are talking to Honda to get advice on what to do.
Serious safety problem. !
Honda has to come up with a solution it is abundantly clear now they have a serious one for a percentage of their bikes.
Keep you posted

Report your problem to the NHTSA, as you had mentioned it is a safety concern. I think 2021 owners need to turn up the heat on this issue. Dealers can’t be depended upon to drive toward a resolution. One dealer’s brilliant recommendation was using premium fuel and running hard to try to clear the problem (rolling eyes).

Ok, now I have a new problem. I stopped in a parking lot this afternoon, I put my bike in Neutral for a minute, then I pushed the Drive button, nothing. My NC is stuck in Neutral. I turned it off, restarted it and was still stuck in Neutral. So, my NC left me stranded. I called AAA and had it transported to the local Honda dealership where I bought it, they told me that they cannot look at my bike til October 1st. that's 3 weeks... I am so done with this bike.

Well that sucks. There is a code to reset the DTC. Not sure if that would of helped. I did the reset to see if it would help the stalling issue. My dealer is also calling Honda and has some super genius that will look at my bike. I will keep all posted.

I tried reporting my NC to the NHTSA, but my VIN is not recognized...

Yes, my NC stalls after a stop, randomly, but always after a freeway ride in the morning, then coming to a stop, or letting the bike sit for a few hours afterward, then ride to the store, then it will stall. Here is a screen shot from my GoPro at a traffic light.

I received a call from the Honda shop the next morning (yesterday), they said they cold started my bike and it went into gear, then they let it idle for 40 minutes and took it for a test ride and it is working perfectly. So, I picked up my bike and rode over to the BMW dealership, and I am in the process of trading it in on a used 2018 R1200GS. I will pick up the up the Beemer on Tuesday.... I lost $7K in the process.

Sorry you’re taking a loss, but I can’t blame you for dumping the Honda. Your contribution to this forum may help other prospective buyers or new owners regarding this stalling issue. Good luck with your new ride!

So sorry to hear that disaster.Picked up mine from the dealer .They reflashed the computer. Like u I had enough and drove to kymco dealership to pick up a aka 550 scooter
But my Honda seems not sick anymore
So I decided to give it a few days more.
Good luck with GS

Thanks fellas, I really like my NC, it is probably the best handling bike I have ever ridden, out of 50+ bikes I have owned in my lifetime. It is such a fun bike to ride! If you are considering a new 2021 NC, I would get the Manuel transmission, or wait until Honda works the bugs out of the DCT version. But since I have not owned a car since 2010, I need a dependable bike to commute to work and grocery shop with.
I want to thank everyone for responding to my posts!

That's a shame Bob, and a tough hit. You had a 12 month warranty and California has a lemon law to protect you. Did you not want to explore those options?

I tried, I have Attorney now. To use the Lemon Law here California, the vehicle must taken to the shop 4 times for the same problem, or the bike is unridable for 30 days or longer. The shop caught on to what I was doing, and refused to document on paper my stalling problem. And according to Honda USA, that shop never reported my problem. This dealership sold me my NC, doesn't care to help me. I have owned my bike for 2 months now, and got nothing accomplish with this dealership. The other dealership I go to in a another town, told me to take it to where you bought. I can't afford to rent a car every time my bike is in the shop. I'm so tired of going around in circles with these dealerships, It is just easier to take the loss and move on. I won't ever buy another Japanese bike here in San Jose again, but I have had really good service with the BMW dealership here. And they give you loaner bike of your choice when your bike is in the shop.

Sorry to hear about this. Really multiple failures. You have a bike issue. Then the dealer network refuses to support you. I don't have any issues with Japanese products but am very militant when comes to bad service.

The attorney is the only way since dealership so disingenuous.
Wanted to let everyone with the problem know that since reflashing the computer by dealer it appears the problem is resolved . Rode over 150 miles yesterday multiple stops no issue. Today will try again before declaring victory.
Maybe that is the solution. Hope so if not will foll

Would be interesting to know if the computer was flashed at the dealer with a different software version that what the bike was manufactured with.

I feel for Bob S. and his 2021 experience but I do remind that the NC700/750 platform is in the 10th model year of production and has no record of stalling issues regardless of transmission option or generation of DCT. The 2021 brings ride by wire throttle control and possibly certain valve timing changes from 2012-2020 models. My own opinion that if there is a problem with the 2021 it will be found in RBW or fuel mapping changes related to RBW or valve timing, not the transmission. The 2021 has been available in the US for about 4 months and stalling is not widely reported though the number of 2021 owners self reporting ownership experiences is tiny.

Before taking positions one way or the other it's important to know what the consumer's rights are and how the California law applies to consumers, dealers, and manufacturers.
