Hi all. Got t boned on my 2012 Nc700x last week and the bike is still in police storage until it can be collected. Just a general question but how likely do you think it is that the bike will be a write off? I was hit at approx 30mph on the right hand side. I think my engine bars, right leg and the right pannier took the brunt of the impact (10 breaks between my tibia and Fibula and a fractured ankle so my lower right leg was pretty much shattered). I could only see the left hand side of the bike after the accident but from what I could see both of the standard Honda panniers were smashed off in the impact but that's all I could see damage wise apart from a large scrape in the paint on the left engine bar where it fell/slid after I came off it.

I'm hoping it isn't a write off but this is my first serious accident on a bike (or otherwise) and I have no experience to draw from as to how bad shape the bike is likely to be in until I can get it collected. I was only discharged from hospital Friday night so can't speak to the investigating officer until tomorrow.

Sorry to hear about your accident and I'd be really surprised if it wasn't totaled. Hope you heal quickly and completely. That sounds like a pretty serious broken leg to me.
Yeah it was pretty serious took 7 hours of surgery to put my leg in an external fixator.

Well shit looks like I'm looking for a new bike once the insurance pays put then. Think if it is totalled I'm gonna go for the nc750x dct especially if I lose some function in my right leg as can get a hand controlled rear brake fitted on that quite easily which saves me any trouble with using the rear pedal brake.

I wish my 2021 NC 750X DCT had a rear brake lever on the left bar but I don't have the mechanical ability to make it so.

It's quite easy as I understand it. just need to find a compatible left hand brake lever/master cylinder and then have the abs brake lines made to fit the increased length needed to reach from the rear brake to the handlebars. Well in theory it would be easy enough but i may need to find a shop that can do it. On the plus side of the accident when I can prove the car driver was at fault I'm looking at around £80k maybe more in compensation from their insurance company. I'm gonna lose around £30-50k in earnings as I'm self employed plus the damage to my leg will pay out around £36-52k, again maybe more if I'm limited mobility once my leg is healed. So will have more than enough to replace the bike and make any necessary mods to it if I am limited in range of movement/mobility with my right leg. Plus the cost of my bike which is quite high as it has a lot of accessories. I currently have it insured for £6000 with the price I paid plus the accessories value. I mean I hope it isn't a write off I really do but I would be kidding myself if I said I honestly think it couldn't have serious right hand side damage after the damage the car did to my leg.

I’m glad your injuries were not worse and that your loved ones still have you to hug. Get well soon !
Luckily I wear decent gear all the time. Full spine protector, caberg Duke 2 helmet, rst boots and gloves, Richa pants and jacket etc. Just a shame boots can't offer more leg protection from accidents such as these. I do think I was lucky not to come off worse though as was hit by a Nissan Juke. Realistically I could have had a ruptured spleen, broken hip, broken arms etc if it wasn't for me being so well geared.

If the damage exceeds 70% of the current worth of the bike the insurance company calls it totaled. Typically almost any bike is totaled after even a moderately serious accident due to rapid bike depreciation and expensive replacement parts. So you’re out a bike but very lucky to still be vertical. Good on the gear! Did the Nissan run a red or something?

Sorry to hear about your accident. I'd figure on the bike being totaled, being a 12, it probably hasn't enough value for the insurance to want to repair it.
I hope you heal well and enjoy your new bike.

Yeah exactly that. It's a blind junction so even more hazardous for it. I was only doing about 10mph as had just pulled off and I estimate he was doing over 30 when he hit me as he came out of nowhere I didn't even see the lights approaching as I went through the junction then bam I'm on on the ground with my leg fucked up. Well as long as his insurance cover the value of my bike I'm not too bothered if it's a write off. Think I need to go collect my possessions off it before the insurance collect it.

Thanks me too. Riding is my business so if I cant ride means I need a career change.

Very sorry to hear about this life altering injury. Nothing but the best for a full recovery. If it is not totaled, I would fight for it to be so. Unsure if that is an option across the pond. Here we can engage public adjusters, submit to mediation or binding arbitration, and last but not least litigation.

so glad you made it through that one, wow! As a former Deputy Coroner i can tell you i have seen a lot of those not end well for the riders! I would be very surprised it it were not totaled by the ins co. So, with that in mind go check out the DCT's, Tacoma here has some modifications to his to allow him to ride with left leg challenges. The left handle brake lever is a simple modification as others have already mentioned. With a small amount of time on the internet you will have all of the parts necessary to make the mods yourself, or contact a local Cycle mechanic you like/trust and start making plans with him/her to complete them for you. Best of luck to you and keep us posted with the progress if you would... :{P

Not sure why it would want it totalled unless the bike is no longer is suitable for me given the injury? And i don't think it is possible to ask for a vehicle to be written off here. Naturally no insurer will want to total a bike if it is cheaper to repair it.

Thanks appreciate it. Yeah I thought it would be pretty simple to do just not sure if the DCT switches on the left side would cause any issues with a brake lever. But having said that I wouldn't be surprised if it has been done. I'm already looking at the DCT models. Found some nice ones with most of the mods I would do already done so. I will keep you guys updated on my progress and will post pics once I have a new bike if it comes to that.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune.

The bike is totaled………a tip over in the parking the bike is technically totaled as far insurance goes. So the accident you experienced there is no question the bike is totaled.

For now concentrate on healing ………the bike will wait.

the problem with these police compound is that they charge you on a daily basis so sooner you get it the better.
my lad his car nicked..police found it and put in a compound went to collect 3 days later we faced a £120 bill.god knows what they charge now.

Now it's £150 collection charge + £10 per day storage. That's set by the government. So yeah mine is already at £250 but I can't just go and collect it unfortunately. Only found out where it was today and the insurance comp are going to collect it and deal with the fees and charge to the 3rd party who caused the accident.

Because it is highly unlikely that the level of diligence required to assure it is restored to original condition will be applied and is challenging for most shops. Actually nearly impossible with a 30MPH hit. Its suitability for you after the repair is irrelevant to the claims process (here). Yup. Same here. Insurance companies don't want to pay and is addressed through the consumer protections legislated by states and fed.
