I’m working on removing the engine, and I pulled the stator cover… horrifying!

well, it’s not much of a story. Engine went bang on the M40 a week ago. So looks like the flywheel sheared off. 78,000 miles, 2016 X. But… why would the flywheel shear off? 8k 2016 S engine turning up on Saturday…

Seems unusual, to me. I think, looking at the crank where it’s broken, there’s a crack. So maybe just dumb luck. Hay ho. Stuff happens.
 
Has to be bad luck. I havent heard of such an event to date with this motor, and there are many out there with double that mileage.

On the cam issue, have there been many ?
 
You are just unlucky. It's a fatigue failure and outliers can happen.
The fatigue crack grew over time and when it got to a critical size the alternator departed the scene.
I still think 78K miles isn't that terrible. Second hand engine is best solution IMO.
 
Dead engine out. I won’t pretend it was easy. I pulled the frunk so I could meddle more easily. Toughest was trying to unclip the plugs on the injectors, in the end I just unbolted the fuel rail, and actually getting the engine out of the frame, once it was loose. Taking the cam cover off did the trick. I know it’ll be tricky getting the next engine in, but at least I’m half way there. F6E41170-2D58-4C32-AF8C-C39290A3F12C.jpeg
 
I have a cat like that. Helps me change oil, clean the garage, pack for camping, etc. Loves being around where the action is.
I also have an excellent halper kitty. She sits with me whenever I am repairing electronics, occasionally batting the tiny easy-to-lose screw off of the table and on to the ground.
 
First thought:

Original owner purchased new or was the bike purchased used ?

Was there knocking or any Unusual engine noise prior ?
Did the engine lock up on the highway ?
Was there any loose or wrong parts in the stator area on the first disassembly ? Like a crushed bolt/nut etc
Was the left side cover ever off for service?
Is the stator bolt still tight in the broke part of the crank ?
How much oil was in the engine at the time of failure ?
Does the crank ( part still in the engine) still turn or rotate ?
