Wind noise for tall riders

Another option is to get something like the BRUUDT Windscreen adjuster.

It does a few things which taller folks might find handy. First, it allows an extra 1/2" -2" height adjustable range which can be done without disassembling anything (Allen key is only tool needed). Second, it pushes the base of your windshield out which will give you this pressure equalization similar to your holes. Third is that it moves the windshield base further forward which can mean the difference in clearing a set of hand guards. Fourth, it acts to really stabilize the well nut mounting system that Honda chose to use. A set of these in the well nuts really ties that front mount together pretty well.

As an example of that last point, I've tried the Cee Bailey shield and it worked pretty well as designed. One of my biggest concerns about it was that it wobbled a bit at highway speed. I've read the accounts of folks who have had large shields mounted on the well nuts pull loose at highway speed (I still think this could have potentially been user error since it's easy to not install the well nuts correctly). I added the BRUUDT adjusters to the Cee Baily and it really solidified the setup.

Now I've gone completely custom DIY where I've added the BRUUDT brackets to an aluminum mounting plate that holds a Givi Airflo spoiler. All that mess is still mounted with the OEM well nuts and it's probably the best windshield I've ever used. Sadly, it's not really something that's repeatable unless you coordinated with Madstad to fabricate a mount plate to attach the spoiler to... which wouldn't be a bad idea at all. I might still do that, seeing as my mounting plate isn't what you would call polished. I do have about 5" of tool less adjustability and another 1.5" if I break out the Allen wrenches. It truly covers all bases.

A word of caution: Once you start drilling, you can't stop!

I added two holes, one each over the upper bracket screws, so that I can remove the Touring Screen/Bracket as an assembly.

I also added two more ventilation/pressure equalization holes. I just did 300 miles yesterday and am still happy with this setup.

I really am interested in either drilling holes or adding the Bruudt adjusters. It would be nice (maybe impossible) to know which would work best before spending money or drilling holes.

Cagedogger, did you notice any improvements in smoother air with the Bruudt adjusters?

Well, drilling is free. If you don't like it, you can always cover the holes with grommet plugs or just clear packing tape...

Good write up. I am 6'2" and the buffeting I get is intolerable for my ears. I'm awaiting a Puig Touring screen right now. Hope it does the trick!
If not, I'll do as you did - I have a tall Honda screen but no add-on as you have.

I just installed the Puig Touring screen on my NCXD and though it is a ton better than the pathetic little screen they come with, it still leaves a LOT to be desired, even with the 2" higher extensions I installed. BTW, I am 5'9". I absolutely MUST wear earplugs on this setup. Maybe the Madstad would be a better screen.

Tried to order the BRUUDT, but their screwy order page only lists about half the prefectures in Japan in their scrolling list, and mine ain't one of them.

Hey, if the to-your-door cost isn't prohibitive, or the dynamics too convoluted for you, I'm more than willing to have them shipped to me, and then I can forward to you, if you'd like.

That's very kind of you. I've sent them an email....at least I think I've sent them an email, their contact page gives no confirmation....and perhaps it is just a case of the list being incomplete.

I recently added the Puig screen to my bike and am pleased with the humongous difference it makes over the stock translucent postage stamp.

The Madstad is a great screen, but you would want to use earplugs with it -- I do with mine!

Just let me know if I can help, more than happy to. :D

I'm 6'1. I moved the Honda Tall screen from the lower holes to the upper mounting holes. That helped a little. Tried the 3 holes this past weekend. I did notice a difference but it wasn't enough for me. Been debating trying an add-on wing or making the Madstad plunge. Went with the Madstad (22inch), I had ordered it before this idea came out. I've had it for 3 days riding in traffic. Major difference with it. Really cut down and almost eliminated the buffeting when passing trucks. I was worried about not getting enough air during summer but the Madstad gives a nice smooth flow of air to the body so I don't see that it will be an issue. I am having to get used to having a big screen in front of me that I see. I was used to the Honda screen being way below my site line.

I do want to say again that the 3 holes did make a noticeable difference. I think the difference would be better with an add-on wing since in my opinion the Honda screen just isn't tall enough for 6'+.

I agree. My original 3 holes was made to a Honda Tall screen with a X-Creen add-on. With the X-Creen down, I still get a fair amount of noise up at high speed (just wind noise no buffeting). I leave it down for my work commuting since I know I will not be exceeding 45 mph (or maybe a brief jaunt to 60 if I'm trying to get out of a pack of cars). In this configuration, I feel like my body gets the same amount of airflow as it did with the stock screen. I wear a mesh jacket with no liners. In Dallas, heat is an issue and I wanted to maintain full airflow. I had thought that maybe I would want to go back to the stock screen in the summer, but I don't think I will even bother at this point.

I'm thinking about getting some cheap non-airworthy carbon fiber, using my old stock shield as a mold, and making some carbon shields.

So here is my take on this mod. I read a lot of info on the CalSci website and applied those ideas to my National Cycle Vstream. It was pretty easy to do; drill 3 holes and connect the edges with a dremmel. I still have some smoothing to do when I get around to it. Won't get to ride till tomorrow so we'll have to wait and see :)

Looks very good. Hope it works well.
Good job.

I'm sorry I didn't catch this reply earlier. but to answer your question (and alleviate any second self-guessing) yes I did notice a difference (the added space and height relieves back pressure which reduces wind noise), but my setup is not one you'll find anywhere else so your experience will differ.

I really like this! The triangle that you cut almost matches the V-Stream logo. It makes you wonder why they didn't think of that.
