2019: What did you do to/with your NC700 today?

Rode my wife’s NC700x to Starbucks to get breakfast. Said ‘goodbye’ to my favorite barista as today is her last day. She is one of my former fencing students and is moving to Indianapolis to attend college. I rarely go to Starbucks but she is a good kid, it was nice to be able to wish her well

Then to the cycle shop, where I am sitting and waiting. New Michelin Road 5 tires are being installed on her motorcycle. While the rear wheel is off and being changed I will lower the Soupy’s adjustable link down as far as it will go. Trying to get it low enough that she can flat foot both feet at a stop. Not quite low enough yet.

Yes.
I was active on a Goldwing forum about 20 years ago when this was discussed at length. Some "experts" stated that tire compounds changed over time even when stored in a dark closet (as some had done).
But many agreed that you could compare new tires with aged and it was apparent that the old tires had hardened somewhat. Some stated that they mounted new tires that seemed slicker than they should have been (after break-in) and that the date code proved they were old.
It doesn't matter with auto tires so some dealers don't rotate their stock as they should.

The bottom line is that we should mount the newest date we can get and I remember some saying they'd not mount tires more than 5 or 6 years old. And good tire dealers would take them back.

5 years is about the max for auto tires here in AZ. The dry rot becomes noticeable. There is no way I would have tires more than 5 years old on my motorcycle, again. Yes, I did have a 6 year old tire on my bike but I didn't notice it until I pulled it off. The dealer mounted it and charged me too much for it. I just didn't think to check that the dealer would sell me old stock, now I know why the manager pushed it.

Ride home from work was super wet. Had applied the Nickwax Glove Proof two nights ago. Really made a difference to the water absorption of the "waterproof" gloves. I recommend this product if your trying to get more waterproof out of your gloves.

Curious as to how much they charged on labor to remove wheels from bike and mount/balance new tires? Also did you buy the tires from them?

I bought the tires from them, they matched the lowest price I found.

They charge a flat rate of $170 to remove the old, install the new and dispose of the old. They don't care if you buy from them or not. They are a Pirelli store, they actually gave me a really good price on the Angel GT2, but I opted to have them special order the Michelin Road 5 instead.

I gotcha. Man that's steep, they make a killing on that. Something that shouldn't take no more than 1-1.5 hours. Dang near $170/hr! Two more tire changes and you would be able to pay for a tire changer and do it at home on your own time! :D

Tried mine out tonight. It done well, best investment I've made in tooling in a long time. Had to flip rear tire around. Bike is stripped back down, taped up, ready to head back to the track Saturday!

Must be nice having those tools available - I’d certainly have more myself - if I had a garage THE SIZE OF NEW JERSEY to work with :p:rolleyes:

Hmmfph. Think I’ll go buy another new screwdriver today.

I disagree about car tires not having trouble with age. A bit of a slide is less likely to cause injury though.

I really wish Honda had put the tail light as part of the undertail rather than having it hanging way off the back.

I'd expect them to charge half an hour per wheel r/r and then 15 minutes per mount/balance. Shop rates around here are well over $100/hr.

I live out in the country where stuff is a little cheaper and drive older vehicles, makes it easier to support my hobbies. Bought my first house when I was 22, small 2 bed 2 bath, then a couple years later I built a shop similar to the one I have now, as I was getting into rock crawling pretty hardcore. I didn't have much land or budget, so I built a 20x24. Shortly thereafter, I knew if I ever built another, it would be twice that big at minimum. Didn't want to skimp on this one and have regrets later. At 40x36,I'm extremely happy with how it turned out. My side of the shop is 30x36, wife's is 10x36. Works out just right for the both of us.

I rode 180 miles yesterday after work and still made it home in time for burgers/grilled cob! Rode out to Cheney Wa, then down to nearly St John Wa just to get this shot! :{P

There is a farmer/impliment place out there literally in the middle of no-where and this is some of the "Yard Art" he has there around his place.

Woooohoooo! What a nice day at the track! I brought a fan this time so I don't die from heat stroke, man it's so much nicer lol. Lesson learned.

Took the feelers off the bottom of the pegs bc they were dragging, now I'm wearing off the bottom corner of my right boot and the kickstand is dragging on the left side. The toe slider is working alright, but getting close to the actual boot. It's just the way my foot position is.

And I FINALLY touched my knee to the ground....barely lol. Right knee. Its difficult for me to lean off on the right far enough to get it down due to my other foot being so far forward on the highway peg. It's not really a big deal, but feels like "achievement unlocked" haha. Been 10 years since I've scrubbed a knee puck.

Video from the evaluation session to be bumped up to Intermediate group. Started out following the instructor, then SHE waved me by so she could watch/evaluate me, then we went back and forth passing each other a couple more times throughout the vid. She is fast as hell on her little R3! She wasn't riding 100% either. Another instructor got mixed in with us too (blue leathers guy). Instructors wear bright orange or yellow vests over their leathers. Lot more action in this one that those other track vids I posted. I rode SO much faster today too, I had to start using 5th gear on the straights, carrying a lot more corner speed too. Man it was awesome, that is such a fun track!

Tacoma, if the humidity there is reasonable I'd highly recommend a mister to help cool you down

I swapped the front tire and flushed the brake on mine. Since I sold my tire machine I had to get creative as far as bead breaker goes. I wonder how many people use a vise as one.

I enjoyed this. It reminded me of the one time I did a car tire on my 86 escort as a young fellow. I used a walk behind forklift to pick up a small turret lathe to use as a bead breaker. It worked...I don't know what I was thinking...

Yeah man its humid as hell here. That fan is the ticket. I brought it last time but my extension cord wasn't long enough to reach the power source where I was parked. This summer has overstayed its welcome. Ready for some cooler weather for sure.
