Went to city hall to get my city sticker for my car and my wifes. She asked the clerk about one for my bike. I had forgotten all about it, since its still practically new. Had to come back because I haven't memorized my bike's plate number.
I come back and fill out the same form for cars. As she's handing me a sticker I mention that I'm about to change out the windshield (planning on a Madstad) in about a month and ask will I have to buy another sticker. She gives me this strange look and asks if this is a motorcycle. I say yes. She takes back the sticker stating that motorcycles get this little metal tag. I look at it and go "cool".
Get back to my house take the cover off my bike and... question mark!!! Where the hell am I supposed to attach the thing? I go in the house and Google it. Nothing. Every search comes back with how, where and cost to buy but nothing about placement. I search for "motorcycle city tag" and several variations on this. Nobody has anything. I found an obscure reference in a forum stating that its supposed to go on your license plate. Okay, thats a start. So I Google motorcycle plates and get all kind of stuff that has nothing to do with city tags. I search for images of motorcycle plates and none have a city tag. By this time its gotten dark out and I'm frustrated. So I go out to the bike. I look at the plate and the holder. BAM! There are only two screws holding the plate. The state plate sticker is at the top on the right. So the city tag has to go on the left. I put it on under the license plate frame. Nope. The frame blocks the tag. So I put it on over the plate frame and screw it in. Yay! Success!!!
My question - Why the hell aren't there any instructions on installing the damn thing?!?!?! Costs almost as much as one for a car, yet there is not a single picture, diagram or line of instruction on the proper placement of the dang thing anywhere on the city website, even in different cities, states or counties or the whole of the Internet!
Hopefully, this cautionary tale will help the next newbie that has to get a "city sticker" for their bike.
Rant over.
