New member welcome thread..

Mike from southeastern Wisconsin here.
Looking at picking up a new 2018 DCT in a few weeks. Spending hours checking out every bit of information available on the bike and accessories I can find. This forum has some great information!
Never owned a Honda during my time riding at somewhere over 400,000 miles around the U.S. and Canada, figure it's about time and this bike fits the bill from what I can see.

Hi Mike,
I used to spend a good deal of time in SE Wisconsin in the East Troy, Lake Geneva areas.

My wife and I each own NCs and both of have the DCT transmissions. Can't begin to express how much I love it. And she hates shifting so she wouldn't ride too much at all if not for the DCT.

The bike is an easy riding, all around bike. We did a 4000+ mile around the great lakes tour this summer. She on her '16 700x and me on my '18 750x. If the temp is 50 degrees or above you will likely find me on mine. FWIW, I've got a set of Hepco & Becker GOBI luggage on mine, it was the standard for KTM bikes, tough as nails, waterproof, pretty much bomb proof. My wife has GIVI V35 side cases (no top box on her bike at all). Both bikes have Madstadt windshields, both have Denali DRL LED aux lights, Atlas throttle locks and NEMO 2 chain oilers. Her's is lowered. Mine has a Corbin custom seat (she wants one too).

The bikes, modified, make a very nice light touring bike. Never going to be as comfortable as a RoadKing or a Goldwing. Stock or modified, the bikes are great for commuting, especially with the DCT. Great for hoping on and going!

Thanks for the reply melensdad.
I have read your posts and found them helpful.

The side cases are going to be the biggest decision for me. Givi is not listed as water proof or water resistant. The last thing I ever want is water soaked anything so I've eliminated them for that alone. I'll be checking out the Hepco cases. I found the Shad cases watching a YouTube of a guy that had a nc700 with about a 100,000 miles with Shad's and nothing but praise about how they held up. He had ridden Viet Nam, Cambodia and other countries and his bike looked like it was well used to say the least. Not planning any cross country trips at this time, kind of done enough of that. I'll keep searching and report back once I have the bike and start adding accessories.

FWIW, the Hepco & Beckers are typically a bit harder to find. Shad is a bit easier to find than H&B. GIVI seems to be available everywhere.

My wife has ridden in the rain, with her clothes/belongings in her GIVI V35 cases and nothing inside ever got wet. Perhaps not listed as waterproof, but from experience they seem to be waterproof. The cases, like many, are bottom hinge. They look great on the bike, as if they were designed for the bike, but I don't like bottom hinge cases. Buy internal carry bags if you get bottom hinge cases, or do what other do and modify the interior of the case with hooks, nets, partitions.

My H&B Gobi cases are definitely waterproof, sealed with a gasket. Double wall construction that is actually designed to hold water, and with an option spigot, can be used to carry a couple extra liters of water! I crashed one of my side cases into a brick pillar trying to escape a rain storm and it barely scratched. I honestly think they are as close to bomb proof as practical. An aluminum case would have a nice dent in it. A rigid plastic case probably would have cracked. The Gobi cases are a top load, but the tops are not removable, they are on a hinge. I'd prefer they remove completely but I'm happy enough with the hinge on the top back. I prefer packing my clothes in a bag and dropping the bag into the case. Flat tools, etc can be stored under the bag in a top loaded case. I really like the H&B rack system. Most of the rack removes from the bike with a few 1/4 turns of hex nuts so if you want to remove all the cases its a 1 minute job, the cases and side racks are gone, leaving only a couple low profile brackets that are affixed to the bike.

ALSO, very few side cases will hold a helmet. If you want to hold a helmet in a side case then a GIVI V35 or V37 might actually be a good choice, or a similar case from another brand that is contoured to fit the bike. A flat sided case won't be wide enough to hold it. My wife stores her helmet in her FRUNK, but my size "L" helmet from Arai will not fit in mine (I think its the wind deflector on the top/back that is just a bit too large to allow the FRUNK to seal). I put my helmet in my top box, which is a 42L H&B Gobi case.

More great information, thanks.
Do you happen to know what size the handle bars are? Can't find that anywhere. Looking at the BarkBuster Storm's. Any opinion on these?

Found it. 7/8

I got the VPS instead of the Storm thinking I would like the increased air flow (it gets very hot where I live) if I was buying them now I'd get the Storm, when it's hot I take the plastic off entirely anyway (2 Phillips screws on each side) and the Storm would provide better coverage when I did want it, I know I can buy just the plastic but I'm cheap and they cost $30 lol

I think the Storm will be what I get. I have Gerbing heated gloves and the two of them should work fine. And as you said, just loose the plastic when it is warm out

what else have you added that you would rec?

A chain oiler and auxiliary lights, switch the headlight to an led
And if you have an interest in having a 12 volt outlet in the frunk it's best to go aftermarket, the OEM is only rated to 1.5 amp and I've had a fast charger for my phone blow that fuse, go aftermarket and you can run an air compressor

Just so you know the NC produces gobs of electrical current people have run a ridiculous amount if accessories without any issues

My chain oiler is a Tutoro but there are plenty of others if that's not to your liking

Oh yeah, bar risers, seat slope fix and a sit-n-fly seat cover

All good information, thanks.
Good to know I can run both the heated jacket liner and gloves with no problem. I'm looking at buying a new 2018 DCT so it should have led headlight.
I run a slime compressor and my Gerbing off a battery pig tail now and will do the same with this bike.

The list of Amazon links covers most of the accessories I've purchased and installed except the sit-n-fly and chain oiler, I also replaced my mirrors but that's only because I broke one

I linked a fuse box and ground bus that I've installed in the faux walls next to the frunk, I still have room to spare and I also installed two on/off switches and two power outlets inside the frunk

You can also get a copy of your key made that only works the frunk and not your ignitionCapture+_2017-02-10-07-15-15-1.pngCapture+_2016-07-11-06-05-04-01.jpeg20190212_134033_HDR.jpg

The sit-n-fly gives cushion and keeps water from collecting at your crotch in the rain and let's a welcome breeze through your nether region when it's hot out

As for running things off my battery, I'm a K.I.S.S. subscriber. (Keep it Simple, Stupid)

Battery Tender pigtail to run a pump.

Batter Tender USB adapter to power my phone and my headset => https://www.amazon.com/Battery-Tend...ords=battery+tender+usb&qid=1577831940&sr=8-3

I no longer use a GPS, the iPhone does a better job than my old Garmin and I like the SCENIC software and maps (which can be used with or without a cell connection) and a quality USB cable will snake out of a closed FRUNK to reach my iPhone while riding.

Congratulations on the motorcycle and your first riding season, looks like it went well, welcome to the forum.

The coastal picture that has you in it, was that taken near Horsfall?

Hi rippen209, that picture is at Dexter Reservoir. You know, my 1st. riding season was spectacular! BUT, I did end-up crashing in the forest when I took a turn a hair to wide. It was a low-side crash that shattered my ankle. I’m actually still recovering from it. The bike had minor damage, till a logging truck helped haul-it out from the ravine. I have it back from the shop, it’s like new and I’ve gone on three short rides. I’ve done two small upgrades to it, fender extender and mud guard I made out of a cut piece from a rubber door mat. My next upgrades are going to be the windscreen and front headlight. I’m 6’2 and the stock windscreen is way to low. I have been stung by either wasps or bees on several occasions on my neck, because of the low screen. My favorite places to ride are around the lakes, and on forest roads.
