What other motorcycles do you own, or have owned? I really like my NC, and since I lowered the factory windshield and got rid of the deflector I enjoy it even more.

But…. I can’t help but want to try something new or different. I’m really thinking of a supermoto or a buell city x. No reason why, the NC does everything I want to do so well. Maybe just a little cabin fever setting in.

I like to have a diverse fleet, each motorcycle having a special character and purpose.

I have:
1) Honda NC700X. We all know this is a do it all motorcycle. I use mine for mountain riding and solo long distance touring. I will keep the NC “forever”. I even have a spare engine sitting in a box.
2 Honda CRF250L Rally dual sport. This bike has the best suspension to absorb rough roads and National Forest gravel roads. I use it for solo riding around rural roads at home, and I trailer it to forests where I camp for a week or so.
3) Honda Goldwing 1800. Great two up and all around long distance tourer. I love the Wing. Until it gets too heavy to handle, it would be the one bike I would keep if I was limited to just one motorcycle. The wife rides as passenger with me most of the time.
4) Honda Ruckus 49cc. This is a blast to ride on little country roads with no traffic. The wife has one, too. I’ve put 5000 miles on my little scooter and it hasn’t been more than 30 miles from home, unless we trailer it to a state park camp ground.
5) Zero DSR electric motorcycle. It was time to move on to the future. This bike accelerates like no other vehicle in my fleet, but that is not why I own it. I like it because it is quiet, smooth, and leaves behind all the nonsense drama of the internal combustion engine. Maintenance requirements are minimal. It’s so simple. Turn the key, turn the throttle, and I’m gone.

I have recently owned dirt only bikes, but due to injuries and death, and other obligations amongst my riding group, along with limited riding opportunities, has caused me to give up dirt bikes. However, riding dirt is a great way to improve riding skills.

Other than the Goldwing, I avoid heavy motorcycles. Also, high powered, fast motorcycles are of no interest to me. I am content with my fleet now. Any new additions need to have all new technology or alternate fuel capabilities. Nothing on the market right now excites me.

Edit to add:
Past motorcycles were
Yamaha DT125B
Kawasaki S3-400
Suzuki GS550, GS850G
Honda ST1100
Kawasaki Ninja EX250
Kawasaki KLX140L, KLX140G

I see GS850G in your list. I owned an ‘82 for 16 years. One of the magazine reviews said, “One thing is for sure, if you’re heading somewhere on the GS850G and you’re not enjoying the ride, you can’t blame it on the bike”. That summed it up well.

It was indeed a great bike. Ahead of it's time really. Nice engine, about 80 hp, shaft drive, tubeless mag wheels, big gas tank, great seat, triple disc brakes, good ergos... a real fine traveling machine for 1981

First bike was a Royal Enfield bullet 500. Fun bike but too much maintenance for a new rider with no support system and minimal mechanical skills. That’s the same reason I got the nc750x when I got back into riding rather than the new RE 650 interceptor. I just can’t handle 3000 mile valve checks. I also don’t have a mechanic nearby in case I need one.

A very good yet very underrated motorcycle at least in these parts. I only even saw a few of them on the road when they were current. Even as classics they are still rare here.

Of the previous bikes that I have owned, one stands out strongly and that was a KTM 950SM Supermoto. I originally visited the KTM dealer to try out a 640Supermoto but was disappointed with it. Because I had travelled so far He persuaded me to try the 950 which was just recently introduced. I was gone so long that he got worried. I had a new one within a week. It is one of the most fun motorcycles I have ever owned and almost impossible to ride at a relaxed pace.

You mention a Supermoto and I reckon it would be worth trying one in some form or other.

That KTM 950 looks like a lot of fun, and probably some trouble as well!

I didn’t mention, my past bikes.
Kawasaki 500 Vulcan, a college friend needed money and I had some to spend, got a steal on the bike and rode it all through college.

Honda 1800VTX, I was really looking for a CB700 nighthawk or NC, but again found a deal I couldn’t pass up. The torque was addictive, but couldn’t stand the size of the thing.

Now I’m on to my NC, it’s much more fun to ride than the first two.

My bikes up to where I am now. Funny how vivid details about them stick with you.

1990 in 7th grade: as a bribe for moving states without being told by my parents we were in fact moving: 1985 Honda XR100, 1984 Honda XR200 for my brother and I. Maine was/is a much better place to live than Massachusetts, good deal.
1991 in 8th grade: Traded the XR200 for a 1986 Suzuki RM80, and a 1981 Yamaha tri moto 175 2 stroke 3 wheeler. Stupid trade, but I was in 8th grade.
1996 in 12th grade: received a mint 1985 Honda Shadow 500 for graduating high school
1997 sold Shadow 500 for $800, so I could buy a 1983 Kawasaki gpz750 non turbo
1998 younger brother blew up my gpz while I was away at college when he found the keys hidden in a budweiser neon light in my bedroom, thanks bro
2000 found a junk gpz 750 in the Maine want ad uncle Henrys, it had a 4 into 1 bassani exhaust that made people swear and point at me when I zinged by their houses, swapped engine into my nicer frame/body blown up gpz
2001 graduated college and came home to find my non college attending blue collar buddies all had dirt bikes again, bought an awesome 1985 Honda XR350
2002 Sold the gpz and XR350 because my parents were charging me rent and for oil because I came home after college, paid for my 1st apartment with my girlfriend, who I still have and modded into my wife :)
2004 bought a Suzuki Intruder 1400 when I got my 1st teaching job at 25k a year, I was loaded, great torquey bike but top end was a strain
2005 while still rolling in my 25k a year megabucks, bought my teenage dream ride, 1993 Honda XR600r
2007 My younger bro, the same one who blew up my gpz, blew up my XR600 as it was stored at his house, thanks again dipshit
2009 Sold Intruder 1400 and regretted it every day, went without a bike for 2 years
2011 Had my first daughter and needed a bike bad, ignored all advice I read on the forums and bought a 2005 Kawasaki z750s. Awful ergonomics and rattled like a dollar store electric guitar in your bones when you went fast. The seat was like sitting on a slanted forward slippery playground slide. Started to doubt if I could have more kids with my coconuts riding on the gas tank it was so bad.
2013 Had my 2nd daugther, sold the z750s and the next day bought a 2003 VTX1800c. Power was awesome, but didn't excite me to lean around corners and was not into the laid back ergonomics
2016 Had my son, now with 3 kids, not a lot of time to ride
2018 bought a 2001 Honda XR400 to use on dirt and street legal, sold the VTX the next day

At this point, I realized that my street legal xr600 and 400 were not that great for cruising on the streets and the 600 was too big for the dad trails I rode. And like a fish trying to walk on land I suffered for a couple of years not really riding on the road and barely riding dirt.

2019 Covid hits, I need an outlet to get out of my batshit kid crazy house. Bought my 2014 NC700x without even knowing the model existed until the day I saw it for sale on line in the want ads. Bought it without test riding it, my faith in Hondas is strong. Immediately giddy and had perma grin from riding it. After my wife said it sounded like it was a water bubbler with the stock exhaust, put a Delkevic pipe on it, 2" rox risers, and have sworn to keep it my quiver with the XR400 and XR600 until I am shitting in diapers while riding them.

all the bs about low revving, not fast enough, and a weird vw beetle frunk on the 700 do not factor into my brain when I am standing up on the pegs fluking up the mountain roads and leaning around the curves of western Maine and NH. The sound of my delkevic exhaust with the baffle out makes me feel like John Travolta on the light up dance floor in saturday night fever. I feel bad for people who do not own one. I love this bike, and I love that no one knows what the hell it is. I have a seat concepts seat to put on it and this spring and some red, orange, and yellow vinyl to make custom graphics to make it more my own and I will be as anxious to ride it as I am right now to see this fucking pandemic end.

A long winded response I know, but it felt therapeutic to put to words, and right now, where we are as a country, world, and human race, it is one of the few things that can change my mood for the better with the simple push of a button. Ride safe.

Sincerely,
the dude

Duderama,
I just stumbled across your post.
So on point.
The NC is a superb motorcycle that so many just don't get. Including some of those dip shit mag reviewers.
Anyway, thanks for saying it the way you did. I identify with that last sentence. The isolation and fragmentation of the country is seeping into my psychic well-being, and seems like a collective insanity is the new norm.
Peace.

@LanceK Specifically looking at your thoughts on the bikes you mentioned:

Yamaha WR250R Supermoto Conversion - 100% the most fun bike I have ever and probably will ever own. The only bike I really wish I didn't sell.
Buell XB9 - Fast, loud, horrible handling. Very cool engineering and looks but not all that good of a bike. Definitely the bike I owned the shortest amount of time.

Additionally:
Ural Gear-Up (still own) - Slow, fun, unique, quite a handful. Gets lots of attention and needs lots of attention.
Yamaha XJ750 - First bike
Ninja 650R - 2nd bike. Dead reliable.
BMW F650GS - Great little ADV though a bit heavy. I do miss this one but it is very similar to the NC.
BMW F800GS - Money pit. Preferred the F650GS as a complete package although the 800 was more luxurious and better on the highway.

Then I found the NC. Smaller than the F800, more functional, cheaper to run, more reliable, less maintenance... You see where I'm going.

Grew up on dirt bikes and got my first street bike at 20 years old. 56 now, let me see if I can remember them all. Honda: 84 Sabre 700(first bike) Nighthawk 700s, CBR600 F2,F4,F4i, 600rr, XR650L, 996 Superhawk (twice)'NC700X (present ride)CB500x, Goldwing, ST1300 Suzuki: Katana 1100, DRZ400s,
Yamaha: FZ750, 94 and 99 Vmax, FZ-1 ,FZR400
Kawasaki: ZRX1100, ZX7, KLR650, Concours 1000+1400, Z1000
Harley: 5 Sportsters, 84+88 Softail custom, 08 Heritage Softail, 09 Fat Boy,08 Fat Bob, 2019 Street Glide Special (present ride)
