Return to the Land of the Dragon

I got home safely at sundown after a rather hot, windy, 600 mile ride. It's odd to start the day on the Tail of the Dragon, and end it riding on crappy, flat roads among corn fields.

I always have a good time when I ride in the Smokies (who wouldn't?), but riding and hanging out with this group at Kickstand Lodge made this one of the best Smokies events ever. Thanks to everyone that came out and shared their love for riding, and a special thanks to drdubb for inviting us all to come this year!

I was riding back home to Wake Forest NC last Thursday from St Louis, and thought about stopping to hang out with you guys for the night. I didn't have my camping gear with me though so I continued on home. Good to see some pics of the meet. Maybe next year I'll make it.

I arrived home about 2:30 this afternoon after a great time at the Kickstand Lodge and the great roads in North Carolina. Met a bunch of great people but hope I will not be tested to see if I retained any names. I hope to see you all again soon. The pictures I took this weekend are posted at this link: https://sawride.smugmug.com/NC700Xs-in-NC/

Steve

Great pics! I stayed in that same cabin (#2) when I was down there with the Nighthawk folks in 2013. Glad you all had a great time!

When I got home last night, was I in for a surprise. My entire property was full with police cars, fire engines, ambulances, and a lot of folks. Seems a couple of fellows in a high preformance boat had made the wrong turn in the dark, came down the private canal behind my home at a high speed, and launched themselfs up the 21 foot slope behind my house.

However, amongst all this commotion my wife came running out of the house to greet me with a new longer honey do list!

Now when is the next trip ???????????????!!!!!!!!

I made it home safely. I took the slow way home and got home after 9.5 hours-and that is only with 2 short gas stops (at the 6 hour mark I was thinking, if I went the Interstate I could be home now instead of being in Danville Ky). Hwy 127 up to Danville Ky is a nice ride, north of Danville-boring 4 lanes.

"The Return" trip stats:

Total miles: 2043
Lowest MPG 66, highest MPG 85
PR4 chicken strip 3/8" on right rear
Fun rating 10/10
Butt soreness 9/10

For fun on the trip home, I ran 50 miles on the flashing fuel bar. I put in 3.53 gallons, so there was still probably 10 miles left in her.

After 9.5 hours in the saddle yesterday with a total of only 20 minutes off the bike, my butt soreness is 10/10 today!

To those that rode with me Friday in the rain I say thank you for being good sports and following me in the search for the rumored NW Passage. At least the rain did not last forever and the BBQ was good. This was the only group picture I got - Thursday somewhere on the Cherohala. Left to right: Jim, drubb, Paul, 670cc (figuring his mpg for the ride up the last hill) :)

My older son wins the prize for the "Most Worn Tire" after the trip.IMG_2547[1].jpgIMG_2548[1].jpgwoohoo.gif

There are several theories as to why the left is more worn than the right.

It is known the 2014 tires were not much good also. This one has about 3000 miles on it.

One of the folks is dead, so pictures would not be too cool. I moved into this house in 1971. Not a single problem. Now, this is the second time in two months we have had a person die in the water from an accident behind my home. A jet ski accident and now a boat accident. The sad part is that these folks all grew up here on the canal as kids. These were experience folks who grew up on the water front.
