Rolled to the start hotel this afternoon. Pretty uneventful run from Maine. Weather was fine, but really hot and muggy running I-40 to Albuquerque..It was 47 deg F when I left Maine and I packed all my heated gear..Hopefully there is one huge, giant bonus in like, Inuvik ;-)

Was really surprised to find out how anemic the bike is when running up a grade with a headwind..couldn't pull 6th gear at 70 mph and had to drop to 5th..Had the throttle pinned a few times and still lost speed..I'm thinking of pulling the panniers and just running with the Givi top box and the funk for the first leg. It could work since the first checkpoint is back at this hotel. I probably packed too much stuff anyway ;-)

My 3.5 gal aux tank actually only holds 2.8 gallons usable (I refuel on the sidestand) and running the speeds that are common out here (80+mph) mileage is in the toilet...I would NOT want to try this with just the stock tank. I'm ok with the range I'm getting, somewhere a bit over 300 miles/tank which is about all my butt can take with the stock seat. Bringing the NC to the local dealer tomorrow morning for engine and trans filter changes..Should be good to go for the duration of the rally. Had new chain/tires installed in Maine just before I left.

Motorcycles are scattered around the hotel, there are probably a bit more than a dozen rider here so far. Things will pick up considerably tomorrow and Saturday when tech inspection, odo checks and the paperwork begins. We roll @ 10:00 MST on Monday for where? Won't know until Sunday night....

I'll try to wander around tomorrow when I get back from getting the bike serviced and see if I can take and post up some pics of the long distance mounts some of these guys are running. Pretty impressive stuff. I know that there is another NC 700 running and I'll get some pics of his ride too.

Saturday and Sunday is pretty much balls to the walls getting ready and once the rally starts all riders go dark so there is no posting other than what you find in the official IBR daily reports, the FJR forum, or maybe the Motorcycle Tourer's Forum.

Iron Butt Rally - 2015

I've been running the bike with all three Givi boxes, the Maxia 52 liter and the pair of E22's lately. I was on a slab-blast a couple days ago into stiff headwinds and only averaged 55 MPG. I was able to keep it in "D" for sixth gear.

Makes me wonder, what is the smallest bike to finish the IBR?
I hit the wall with my NC coming back from Ark early this year. It's why I now have a Tenere also.
Safe riding to all!

Feast your eyes on these:

Iron Butt Finishers and Records

The short answer:

Smallest* motorcycle to finish an Iron Butt Rally:

2001 Kieth Keating, Suzuki GN125 (no repairs - stock!)
2001 Paul Meredith, Cagiva 125 (one engine swap)
2001 Bob Ray, Honda Reflex Scooter (250cc)
1997 Martin Hildebrandt, Zundapp KS175 (Martin is from Germany)
1995 Ed Otto, Honda Helix (250cc single cylinder scooter)
1993 Don Dingbaum, Honda CBR600F2
1993 Doug Packard, Kawasaki KLR650

* Due to concerns over hi-speed traffic in the United States and Canada,
minimum displacement is limited beginning in 2003.

Wow! That is truly amazing. I would have never guessed a 125 (much less two) could have finished it no matter how determined the rider!
Thanks for the stats kpinvt!

+1
Read "Hopeless Class" about a guy who completed the rally on a BMW R60 "With only 50 hp". Apparently they allow in a few bikes that aren't considered to have a hope of completing. 125 cc is a whole order of magnitude less bike than the BMW R60.

BTW the book is a great read.

Trouble with headwinds and high speeds too

I'm the other fella! :) It is so rare for me to even see another NCX, let alone an NCXD, and I've never even parked in the same vicinity as another one until now!

I too had a lot of trouble coming west from Texas through New Mexico. I kept having to switch to MT mode and cycle between 5th and 6th, sometimes even dropping to 4th just to get to the 75 mph speed limit. I figure it's a combination of my portly luggage (Shad SH50 and Givi V35s), too much weight, heavier cruiser tires (Commander II rear and ME880 front) my Madstad screen, and the crazy winds out here. I ended up getting 42 mpg out here compared to 52 mpg everywhere else when my bike wasn't straining.

Hammy

It is Saturday evening and most of today was spent getting the NC through tech inspection, doing an odometer check, signing releases and having my medical evacuation and liability insurance checked. Lots of waiting in lines but to the credit of the IBA staff (mostly all volunteers BTW) it went relative smoothly.

Got lost on the odometer check, which was a 20 mile loop on parts of I-40 and I-25...Had to do it twice. Think about it: I'm heading out on a 11 day 11,000 mile rally and I got lost on the odometer check...Yikes! ;)

Ran into Hammy in the parking lot and we exchanged greetings..It is very cool to see another NC here...We are certainly in the minority among all the huge Goldwings and BMW GSs that are everywhere. There is one rider on a Ninja 250 (!)...Couldn't get a pic of it (most of the bikes are under covers).

Tomorrow I have to attend a mandatory rookies meeting (I ran but didn't finish in 2011) and later that evening we will have our starting banquet where we will have dinner and get our rally packets. Monday at 10:00 we roll and like I posted before, all reports from riders will then go dark.

This is the poster for the Rally: I'm seeing that maybe a National Parks tour is a possibility?

My NC700xd tucked in a corner of the parking lot after the odometer check. You can see where I had the odometer check directions attached to the windscreen: Yes, that is a STOCK seat..I am the only idiot in the rally (I think) with a stock seat on their bike....Yes, I did go to the local bicycle shop when I arrived and bought a pair of $140 padded bicycle shorts ;-)

The convoluted (to me anyway!) directions:

Finally got my Krista2 lamps installed about three days before I left Maine. I actually just tonight got back from the parking lot where I adjusted/aimed them..

This is Hammy's bike, saw it Thursday in the parking lot when I rolled in:

I've seen two bikes so far with forward looking IR panels. Rider told me he can see heat signatures from critters at night up to 1,800 ft away!

This BMW1200RT is running some seriously Uber Clearwater lamps. Those top LEDs put out about 7,500 lumens each. The headlight on your bike puts out about 1300 to 1500 (!). The lower Ericas are each rated about 6,000 (!). I'm running a pair of Krista2 rated at 3,000 lumens each and can hardly use them they are so bright. The guy running these can cook bambi with them!

If one GPS is good, then two must be better..
How about three? I'm running a Garmin 590LM w/the optional tire pressure sensors and I really am beginning to love it. It recalculates much faster than any GPS out there and after using it a bit I think it is a keeper.

There are a bunch of photos on the web of 2015 IBR bikes so I'm not going to post a ton of pics. If you search for the IBA Magazine facebook page you can see quite a few. The daily IBR reports have begun and I must say, the first report is excellent, especially if you don't what the Iron Butt Rally is all about....http://www.ironbuttrally.com/IBR/2015.cfm

Met a couple of international riders that are competing...Germany, Australia and Great Britain..

If I get a chance tomorrow and something interesting happens before the banquet I'll post up..Otherwise the next thing will be my 2015 Iron Butt Rally ride report ;-)

Quick look of the impound area of the parking lot where the rally bikes are parked..I think there will be about 90 bikes rolling on Monday and for safety, the New Mexico State Police will escort us out..

When I did the odo check for the Minuteman in 2008 I was handed a slip of paper with my odo reading at the start. I got a little lost on the way back, about an 1/8 of mile, but the right side pocket on the dash of the Silver Wing where I was keeping the paper popped open and the paper flew out. I pulled over but could not find it. Rally staff asked what me what my odo reading was when I left but I couldn't remember. I was having trouble remembering my own name I was so keyed up. Rally staff said I didn't have to do a recheck.
