Yeah, Mormons pulled carts across the lands to the Utah deserts, often didn't have mules or horses or oxen. Doesn't mean it's fun.
Looks like an adventure to me
You realize the standard Africa Twin is only 20 lbs heavier than the NC, right? However the Adventure Sports model is almost 50 lbs heavier because of the extra fuel capacity. Now, this is nowhere near has heavy as the Africa Twin.
Gel cells are simply lead acid batteries with the electrolyte held in a thick gel instead of a liquid. They are no lighter than a flooded lead acid battery and no smaller but because gel batteries required a different charge current value and charging profile they were easily damaged and often lived short lives. Because of the charging problems gel batteries have largely been left behind in powersport, marine, and automotive applications and replaced by AGM or absorbed glass mat batteries. AGMs are standard factory OEM in NC700/750s. AGMs have the advantages of gel batteries without the charging issue disadvantage (they charge just like flooded lead acid batteries). However, they are the same weight, no lighter or smaller.Humiliation is the great equalizer.
You learn a lot as a man on a mountain when a woman passes you with a case of coke and a 20lb bag of rice on her back. Her legs are freakishly muscular. This happens every day, a hundred times a day on Mount Kinabalu. Yes. This is where you learn about performance and weight and efficiency. This is a real place. I highly recommend it. Get ready to suffer!
It is 5,000 feet, and all you wanna do is quietly turn around and yak into your shorts as to not make a scene. Mostly because someone else is out performing you in every way. The porter lady passes you with a smile and a nod. And she will make that trip twice more today. You will make it... once. Not gracefully.
The NC is a great way to get some of that advantage back.
Nobody knows that your trunk is just an empty space. The battery there can be replaced with a gel cell. And guess what? You wont't feel that weight anymore either. When you replace a lead acid battery with a gel cell, you suddenly can turn quicker, dodge faster, and jump higher. There are some trade offs, but there are lots of ways to shed weight.
The one thing about the NC you should know is, there are not many ways to shed weight. It is what it is. And there are lots of ways to add weight and keep going. I learned that having the wrong tires on the NC bike can change a lot in terms of weight and control. Compare the Michelin Pilot to the Shinko and the Avon. Big difference. Huge!
