Hi Folks,

New here, hello!

Just wondering, my NC750X's rear tire is ending it's career soon and I'm looking for replacement. I'm looking to see if anyone has any experience fitting a bigger tire. I live in Costa Rica, and our roads are terrible, filled with pot holes and just outright bad roads all over the place. A bigger tire would give me a slightly better chance at surviving hitting holes and a little more cushion around our bad roads.

I saw someone say they put in a 150/60 tire which is a bit higher.

Anyone else with any similar experiences?

Thank you all.

I run 150/70 dirt oriented rear tires. Fit with no problem. Speedo is off. Going up 1 tooth on the rear sprocket will get the final drive ratio back close to stock so the speedo will be back close to stock.

I think a 300 tire would be really cool plus you probably wouldn't need to use the side stand anymore. (sorry just joking of course ;) )

The 170/60-17 Shinko 705 is about the max size with a fender hugger. It also makes the speedo read 1 to 1.5 mph slow.

Not too much extra space all the way around:

What advantage does the Shinko 170/60-17 have over the Shinko 150/70-17? How much taller does it make the bike?

Ordering a set of Shikno's on Monday.

Thanks

I went with the 150/70R17. My speedo always read low so this got it within 1 kph. The 150 fits like it was meant to be on the bike and I saw no difference in handling or performance. Its a very common tire used on many BMW bikes so pricing and availability are good.

Redwood- it might be better to state your want as "taller" not "bigger"; as most people associate bigger actually meaning wider, not taller.

The width of a tire is obviously not going to do anything* regarding how well it can absorb bumps and potholes, and since you specifically are referring to wanting more cushion, that would equate to a taller sidewall, not a wider tread.

* barring an equal increase in aspect ratio (height to width) but usually the wider a tire gets, the lower the sidewall profile, again, unless we now further veer away from a minor tire change available to fit an NC700/750 X, and into the realm of "balloon" tires like you can find on things like Yamaha TW200 and ATV's.

Honestly I'm unsure as to whether or not a centimetre or so of higher sidewall is going to be all that helpful to combat potholes and rough roads, without introducing poor handling and possibly higher wear, therefor higher running costs too, etc.

If I were you, I would try to avoid as many craters in the road as possible, (;)) while saving up for better suspension bits. It will cost more than a few sets of tires, but in the long run will still be there once the tires wear out.

The 170/60/17 is .78" wider and .24" shorter than the 150/70/17. I personally would pick the 150/70/17 because it is $17.00 cheaper than the 170/60/17. YMMV
Since the 120/70/17 has appeared. I plan on trying this setup, since I can buy two rear tires and one front for $40.00 less than my current set.

Hi Maxter, welcome to the forum! If you don't mind, where do you live in Vietnam? I was there once long ago and found it a beautiful country. Perhaps one day I will revisit.
