That trip looks awesome! I suppose I'm captive to perception. I agree though, a bash plate would make all the difference. The bike is way more capable than we think, but the limitations are pretty clear. So yes, you can definitely take it offroad... within reason.
I've gone offroading with the NC700X... there's some serious limitations. There's very little ground clearance, the tires are too small and too wide, the engine is VERY exposed, the cast wheels are not ideal. It's way heavy. The engine is actually pretty sweet, since it has so much torque. Folks...
I'm running the Leo Vince Carbon:
It's a pretty mature slip on... EXCELLENT build quality, with the baffle in it's not obnoxiously loud but it does add a good bit of character to the engine. I run it with the baffle out, which is starting to get old. It's not crazy loud, and it's a pretty...
I like to redline it on every gear when going from stoplight to stoplight. Stomp on the rear brake to skid to a stop... the girls will go wild. When I want to make the shifts REALLY fast I don't use the clutch when upshifting.
Just kidding (well, sort of... you CAN do all the things I...
I have a OEM with about 2,000 miles on it, I replaced it with a Leo Vince Carbon. I'd be more than happy to sell it and get it out of my apartment, PM me if you're interested! I have no interest in keeping it, so I'll let you have it super cheap.
As far as the Leo Vince, it isn't loud at all...
Rigid Industries D2s... I have them mounted on Givi crash bars. Don't have a picture of them on, but I can take on tomorrow. When I flip the lights on, the sun comes out. VERY well built, totally worth the money. People see you coming from miles. You can see one of them mounted on this picture...
I use my First Gear Kilimanjaro year-round in Texas. The thing that varies is what I wear underneath. I commute and take long trips... for long trips, a dri-fit shirt drenched in water feels like air conditioning. Recently bought a long sleeve dri-fit and it's AWESOME when wet. I like the Kili...
There is... it's pretty minor. Checking bolts, fluid levels, brake pads, idle speed, that kind of fare. It's in the manual. There's not supposed to be an oil change until 8k though.
I went ahead and used the squirt bottle idea to get the extra oil out. First I double checked that I was checking the oil properly, doing it on the center stand and then off the side stand. Both readings gave me the exact same level, and it's much more difficult to do it off the side stand and...
Haha... I'm sure it wouldn't hurt! Tedious details are my favorite kind. I assumed like a noob that you meant letting it rest on the side stand while checking the oil. I'll check the difference tomorrow, though the oil is so overfilled I'm confident it won't come to spec. Thanks for the input!
Thanks for the feedback everyone... I doubt there'll be much of a difference between the center stand and just holding it upright, but I'll double check. I'll just drain the excess (I like the spray bottle idea!) and I assume there hasn't been damage to the engine yet. Thanks again!
I'm pretty sure the motorcycle is supposed to be on an even surface in an upright position. The only place where I could think that oil would come out of is the crankcase breather, though it's clean. If it was coming out of the seals or the sump we'd have serious problems!
Thanks for the quick response... any ideas on what the potential damage from the overfilled crankcase could be? I'd like to make sure that if there is some sort of damage due to it I may hold the dealership accountable.
So I picked up my NC700X around March 20th from the dealership... did the break in and the 600 mile service at the dealership where I bought it. At the time the tech asked me if I had had to fill the oil at all, which I thought was odd since it was a brand new bike. I hadn't even checked the oil...
I have big dreams of going up to the Ozarks (and Big Bend) this summer... we'll see if I can make it happen! It's supposed to be awesome up there... have any good pics??
I did... It wasn't too bad though, that's partly what the gear is for. Some sort of giant yellow bug slammed into my left shoulder and left a comedic number of legs and guts behind, and I hit a bee with my neck which stung me. I'd rather maintain the airflow though, and I like the stock screen...
