Thanks to everyone for your help. The ole NC is back in action. Got the new studs they went in fine with a bit of thread sealant and torque to 60 ft lbs.. increased incrementally from 40.
Update# 2
I just checked my two torque wrenches against one another. I set 600 inch lbs on my small breaker bar and 50 ft lbs on my large (on my car's lug nuts) the larger bar did not move the lug nut at all. So I can assume that they are both set the same, and I assume they are set correctly...
Update:
The studs are easily removed from the hub with a pair of locking pliers and a little bit of elbow grease.
Will order 5 new studs and locking nuts from Honda Parts Warehouse tonight.
The threads on the studs are shot.. they were before the locking pliers but they really are now...
Agreed on both posts.. and hey I could have handled it better too, today was just not my day I guess.
Again apologies for sounding like a jerk.
But on the upside, the tail end of this thread has been awesome, just like the good ole days from everyone I knew I could count one ! Thanks 670CC...
Hey you guys rock, I will take a look ! I will also take some pictures of the backside of this hub for interest sake.. same if I try to get the studs out.
I may have been able to phrase it better, but I guess I thought the request for solution was implied. Anyway, the issue will get resolved. I appreciate all the helpful responses I did recieve though.
By the way..
Instead of calling me out for seeking out official advice, For the first one who can show me any official service manual for the NC700 that says anything other than 80 ft. lbs for those nuts, I will gladly shut up about this and send you $10 on Paypal for proving me wrong.
I'm...
Like this ? Part in question is 15 and current question is if I can turn them out without a real a** pain or if I am better off biting the bullet and replacing the hub.
Okay what could a Service manual tell me that my dealer could not? Again, I called the Honda dealer who sold me the bike again today and they double checked the TQ, 80 ft lbs is correct.
For you guys who do have the service manual, why don't you check for me and let me know what you find ?
That's what I'm talking about, very helpful, thank you Krampus.
I just took another look at it and it appears that the threads on the studs in question have stripped. When I remove the hub from the Cush drive and turn it upside down, I cannot see the studs at all, they are covered, almost...
Okay... Seems clear to me that they may have been over-tightened, now why only 2/5 were over tightened and the other 3 held I don't understand, but whatever.
Could the TQ wrench be out of cal? Sure, it's not an expensive wrench, it's possible.
But beyond all of this advice about how a...
You think I made it up? Why would I go to the trouble, they called me back because they took the time to look it up in the manual. The torque was easily that high, took hogging on a 1/2" breaker bar to break them loose. I put a genuine request for help and advice, clearly this response of yours...
Changing out the chain and front and rear sprockets today...
Removed rear sprocket, called dealer to get torque specs on rear sprocket nuts from the maintenance manual. He called back and said 80 foot lbs.... No problem.
Set torque on 3/5 nuts to 80 foot lbs (with torque wrench), but 2/5...
