For those of us that use our iPhones as our satnavs there has been a bit of frustration that you could only lock the screen in the portrait mode, if you were using the phone in the landscape mode then the screen could not be locked which resulted in the screen flipping between the two modes every time you take a corner.

With the latest IOS 5 upgrade there is now a method of locking the screen in the Landscape mode.

I found the below on the interweb that give details.

Even in iOS 5, an iPhone can still only be locked in the portrait orientation. Luckily for us though, Apple included some new features like AssistiveTouch. When activated, a little square floats on your screen and can be dragged around and placed wherever you like along the edges. When you touch it, a menu appears allowing you to perform various functions, such as locking the screen and adjusting the volume.

Well, one of the options that AssistiveTouch offers is the ability to change the orientation; you can choose from left, right, upside down, and portrait. Now here is where it gets good. You can change the orientation to any of these without unlocking the orientation switch. What’s so great about that? This allows you to change the orientation to landscape while it is still locked! Voilà , your iPhone/iPod is now locked in landscape mode. If you want to switch back, you can change it with the AssistvieTouch menu or simply unlock the orientation. That is all there is to it.

If you want to try this out for yourself, here is the navigation to get to the setting:

Enabling AssistiveTouch:
Settings App>General>Scroll Down to Accessibility>Scroll Down to AssistiveTouch>Toggle on AssistiveTouch.

Switching to Landscape:
Press Floating Square>Device>Rotate Screen>Left/Right

LoL....thanks.

If I want to be nasty, I'd post some stupid rules reminding here.
However, I won't.

I have since changed to a Samsung S3, in protest against Apple's mediocre iPHONE5 "features" and the $1billion dollar fine in their lawsuit against another innovator. I could have gotten the iPHONE5 as I was waiting for its release, but then think I don't wanna eat apples anymore.

BTW, using smartphone for GPS is not very smart, unless you have unlimited data plans. I have.
But this does not cover "overseas" roaming (spelt very expensive, cost both arms and 1 kidney), when I go over to Blackforrest or France or Austria.
A dedicated GPS device is still the best option.

:D

The Tomtom App on the iPhone is all on the phone it doesn't require an internet connection so can be used as a stand alone satnav.

And how MUCH MONEY does it COST to buy this app? Are maps auto-updated? Extra costs?
:p

I'd still buy a standalone GPS device. I have done this analysis before.
BTW, I have iPhone, iPAD (2 of them), Samsung Tab, and finally now Samsung S3....so I know what I am talking about.

Sorry, I think you need to experience a BIG telco bill to understand what I mean.

The Tom Tom app was 99 bucks.

That's right then.
I bought my GPS (some cheap sale unit) for 29,95chf (less than USD29).
Yes, it is Windows-CE based and it works! Came with a mount which I modified and cost me USD3?
That is why I do not pay tomtom for apps.
BTW, I used the GPS more like a roadmap check and not for turn-by-turn instructions.
In my opinion, that sort of GPS travelling KILLS THE JOYS of motorcycle (meaning free spirited riding).
We are not on a train track nor counting waypoints to win a contest.

I do have a Tomtom in my auto, with BT and traffic news, etc. It rocks.
199chf.

The Totom App on my iPhone rocks too! It has the maps for the whole of Europe and the maps are updated every six months at no extra charge.

As I stated before the maps are all contained on the phone so no charges for internet connection when using the App.

If and when I upgrade my iPhone I can put the App onto the next phone, also the App can be used by my wife and children on their iPhones, I think it's good value for money.

Sorry Happy but you do not appear to know what you are talking about! LOL

I still think it costs too much for an app $99.
Thanks for clarifying the bandwidth question. I did not know that, sorry.

Was it Bruce Willis who recently asked Apple, who owns the songs he bought in iTunes, after he passes on?
There was no answer.

You are tied to iPhone, whilst I am free to buy another GPS anytime I want.
I also HAD an iPhone but I never paid anything for any apps.
I also like specialised devices for specialised functions.

iPHONE is a great aggregator of functions, yes. I like it too.

You like it (for the GPS app), I don't. I prefer a standalone GPS and I said why.

So lets leave it at that.
:p
