Hello Everyone.

I was looking at the Arashi Rear Shock Absorber on Amazon and its tempting. It is supposed to be a direct replacement. I contacted the seller and they were happy to respond to my enquiries.

They said it can be adjusted from 3 positions and they sent the picture below. The spring preload adjustment tool is also included.

Has any one tried this? No reviews on Amazon yet.

I replaced my front rotor last year with one from Arashi and it came well package and its been running great. Based on that i am seriously considering getting this.

Description says package includes shock absorber, no instructions. Where do you buy the spring? Description says multiple spring rates available, but I didn’t see how to order one, or a chart to help you choose the spring rate.

Q and A answers the spring rate question as follows: “The spring rate of this shock is 32mm/ 1.26". What does that even mean? A spring rate needs to be described as a force AND a distance, not just a distance.

So why doesn’t the description say a spring is included in the package? Or is it?

This is a typical Amazon listing, lacking in important details. I would walk away from this product.

While you’re emailing them, if it has a spring, ask them what the spring rate really is, expressed in kg/mm, and what rider weight that spring rate is intended for. Also ask them what spring rates are available, and how you would order the one you want.

This seems to be modeled after the YSS shocks. I am familiar with Arashi rotors but not their suspension.

If i go by the quality of the rotor, i certainly won't mind trying out their suspension. The low price might be because they are just coming into market. You can't bring in a new product and charge same price as established brands.

I made the purchase but they said shipping would be delayed because of the Chinese new year.

I love their customer support as they are very responsive. I forwarded the questions from 670CC and they have acknowledged receipt. Its been forwarded to their technical department and i should hear from them soon.

When i install it i will post my experience.

If it's not worse than the stock suspension I will be surprised.

Why are you replacing your suspension?

Another alarm bell went off when I saw that the Amazon listing for this shock says it’s for both NC700X and NC700S. Those two NC models do not spec the same amount of rear suspension travel. Perhaps the linkages are different and the shocks are the same. On the other hand, the shocks could be different, therefore the claim that this same aftermarket shock works with either NC model warrants further investigation.

I just wanted a not too expensive suspension i could tinker with. Stock suspension is limiting. It's a daily driver and i want to see what i can play with suspension wise. If it doesn't work out i will just put the stock back in.

Hi Greg,

I got a response today. I guess one question is answered. It comes with a spring.

Hi,

We received a reply from our teammates. “Multiple spring rates available to accommodate a wide range of riders.” means that we could adjust the rebound speed of the rear suspension to be different, not because it is equipped with many springs of different hardness.
On the other hand, since we have not implemented more tests, we cannot provide clear answers to some other questions for the time being. However, the rear suspension must be able to meet our daily use needs. Thanks.[smile]

The response you received is gibberish. Multiple spring rates does NOT mean adjustable rebound speed. The question was about the spring, the answer was about the shock.

The answer apparently came from someone who knows nothing about a motorcycle spring/shock combination. They even admit in the second paragraph that they know little about the product.

I would buy 10 used Honda OEM shocks before I would take a chance on this one.

Thank you guys.

I like all the different views i am getting on this.

The general consensus is to stick with OEM or get a tried and tested option.

Tried and true options are only that way because people tried them ;). It's your money, and from the sounds you already bought it. Worst case scenario, you wasted a hundred bucks and we are all the more wiser for it. Best case, it works great and saved yourself a decent amount of money.

This shock reminds me of a quote by Terry Pratchett. Especially since the spring has inconsistent gaps.

The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money.

Take boots, for example. He earned thirty-eight dollars a month plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. Those were the kind of boots Vimes always bought, and wore until the soles were so thin that he could tell where he was in Ankh-Morpork on a foggy night by the feel of the cobbles.

But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while the poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet.

This was the Captain Samuel Vimes 'Boots' theory of socioeconomic unfairness.

The suspension might be cheap, but it's just that— cheap. People who know me would never accuse me of being a sinophobe, but I will say there is a wild variety in quality in Chinese manufacturing. This no Zongshen build. The price reflects the quality. And lack thereof

I suggest flooding this clueless seller with questions on Amazon about this product.

I asked on Amazon if the spring was included and what was the spring rare in kg/mm. The seller responded with sales talk nonsense (it can meet their daily needs???). I can only assume they don’t even know what a spring rate is.

"Hi, you will receive the item the same as the picture we showed. This item is a new product and we have not yet conducted data collection. However, it can certainly meet our daily needs. Thanks."

Or they dont know English and using web translator to translate from English to Chinese and something is 'lost in translation' I work at a local university and have multiple young International students (including India and China) and their understanding of the American English language leaves much to desire...

The latest Q&A from the seller on Amazon is shown below. Anyone who really understands how suspension works can digest that and form your own opinion about this product.

A seller answered your question,

"This listing says, “multiple spring rates available to accommodate a wide range of riders.“ how do i specify the spring rate i want to order?"

ARASHI answered:

"Hi. It is a adjustable rear suspension. “Multiple spring rates available to accommodate a wide range of riders.” means that we could adjust the rebound speed of the rear suspension to be different. It doesn't equipped with many springs of different hardness and don't need to order other spring. Thanks."

Hello Mates,

600 lbs/in spring rate on the spring. Adjustable rebound. I just bought it on from the same vendor, seems really well built! Going to use on a 2002 Gas Gas Pampera 250 2T!!

I just unpacked the shock but appear to be fully machined...
