My friend Ed Culberson did that trip many years ago on an old BMW R80G/S. Ed was a retired Army Intelligence officer and was both fluent in Spanish and wise of the ways of Central America. He carried a letter of safe passage signed by Gen. Noriega of Panama back when we liked him (before we didn't like him).

Ed died 22 years ago of Lou Gherig's.

If my kness heel by July, Ray and I are doing top of North America to bottom of South America. We are both old Army fools. However, we will fly over the 100 miles of the Darian Pass. Just way too many drug problems in the Darian Pass currently. Carrying the amount of lead to ride through the Darian Pass would sink the bikes in the mud.
