if its only a small dog why not use a tank bag instead of chopping the lid.

Or you could mount a wicker basket on a rear rack and let the dog ride in that. I actually saw this when I stopped at a gas station in Yakima, WA one time. The guy had a cocker spaniel riding in an open basket behind him. No seat belt, no nothing. I asked him about it and he told me the dog just laid down quietly and rode along. That was one well trained dog!

I've not seen them and since I'm currently 10,000 miles away from home I can't easily check - but my dear wife tells me that there are olenty of small, "top boxes" back home with ventilation for small dogs like our Jack Russell. Now I just wonder where we put the Husky she adopted last year
