NEW seat! Taking a chance...

Seriously? I doubt they are all made the same becuase there is no way my BMS raises me two inches. I'm not saying yours doesn't. Saying mine doesn't.

about two? which could be as little as one inch? It's not much at all, but I don't know how to measure it.

Now, the Bill Mayer seat pad looks like a great option for my interests. I'd do the order today, but I think it would more prudent to actually ride my NC at least once...it's still at the dealership.

I live near a fairly well known, large, Harley dealership (Quaid, Temecula), and I called there and just asked...
"who do you guys call when you need to have a motorcycle seat upholstered?"
they gave me the name of a local shop, and I went there today after work.

re-shape and recover the front seat = $150.00
re-cover the rear seat to match the front = $50.00.

Now, I know this is a big gamble. He's not a specialist, but he's been in business 22 years, and made many seats for the HD crowd.
I figure the worst that can happen is that I'll hate the both seats and end up ordering stock replacements from Honda.
Upholsterer Temecula, CA - Sweetwater Upholstery 951-225-4069
is the shop, and I don't endorse them yet since I haven't seen the work. It will be a week or more until he has time for this project, but I am hopeful.

Photos will come next. He wants to have me in to sit on the sculpted bare pads and give the OK before covering them with leather.
I hope to have photos of the fitting and then the finished product.

I live just north of Temecula. I have checked several places in Hemet & Temecula & the best price I found was in the area just across the street (South) of the DMV. I have had them recover the seats of my Yamaha Virago & my Yamaha Majesty. That was quite a while ago & I have been satisfied with both jobs. I also had blinds installed by a shop in that same area & I DO NOT recommend them.

Serge, look at Strat's seat. It is not a modified like yours, or a replacement, but straps on top of stock.

Well now that makes sense. I thought he was referring to an actual full seat. My apologies.

Here's the "seat pad" I came up with. I already had the sheepskin pad so I'm experimenting with it. I don't find the OEM seat terribly uncomfortable but the forward slope is a bit annoying.

Layered 'before and after' photo below: The sheepskin pad adds insignificant height but the foam pads do and shift the low point to the rear a bit. I'll try this for a while and see how it works out...

Update: So far, so good. I felt more planted in the seat and sliding was eliminated. As an additional experiment, I stuffed some pieces of hard foam in the hole closest to the tongue of the seat which is accessible from the seat's pan (underneath). This produced a slight bump where the seat slopes back up in the front. It was not enough by itself to eliminate the sheepskin.

I've looked over many of the seat threads, and that's why I ride with the Bill Mayer seat pad. ($140 ,see photo)
It was the only thing I could find that accomplished the "dishing" the stock seat lacks that didn't cost over $500. I'm hoping the upholsterer will see the pad and realize what I'm looking for in a re-shaped seat. It should work as a kind of pattern for him.

I came very close to ordering the Corbin seat, but the folks on the phone were .... indifferent, and then the seat got a couple bad reviews on this forum.

Would I like to have the Russel Day Long? You bet I would! Their facility is here in California, so I thought about making that an overnight trip this summer. I decided against because I'm seriously considering a used ST1300 for me and wife for two-up touring. I'd rather put the Russel on that, where it will keep my wife happy, than spend $600 + on the NC. (and of course, getting a 2nd bike is a foolish pipe dream that I know will never happen, so until RDL makes a seat for about $300, I will never own one.)

Ordering the 2014 seat sounds like a good idea! Does anyone know if it's a direct replacement...? No modification?

This is an awesome find. If I hadn't already gotten a seat concepts custom seat I'd be ordering one of these... I may still get on for my vfr.... smileythoughtful (1).jpg

The price however has risen a bit. There are 3 heights and leather or vinyl to choose from

ERGO – Razor (low profile)
ERGO – Neutral
ERGO – Tall
ULTIMA PREMIUM LEATHER $189
ENDURA PREMIUM VINYL $169
SHIPPING $12.68

I just got something like this from amazon.foam and a air chamber inside wool on top.bottom has a non skid pad.the problem is that it is long.it kind of smashes the boys when riding.paid 40.00 for it.I with only take it on longer rides, probley stash it in one of the givi as a just in case pad.I like my homemade pad better.

wow... I'm so glad you thought it was a worthy find. The Bill Mayer "Ergo" seat pad is a very good substitute for a better seat.

I'm disappointed that the price has gone up. It was pretty expensive at $140 a year ago.
It's a good product , but it's on it's way to being as expensive as a new seat!

Strat does it rise you any.it says when to order to give weight, inseam. They can make it to fit I guess.I was just wondering .thanks

it does raise you up off the stock seat about an inch. I'm 5'11, 215lbs, 30inch inseam, and even with the seat pad, I can sill put both feet flat on the ground.

So, StratTuner, did you end up getting the custom saddle made?

I went to the shop, spoke with the owner, ... he seemed enthusiastic. I gave him my phone #, and he said he'd call "when he had time for it".
I'm still waiting for him to call, so I ordered the Sargent seat instead. It will be here Tuesday.

I think it would be fun to strip the cover off the OEM seat, remove the inner pad from the Bill Mayer Ergo, and then attach the Ego to the OEM seat.
Then, get a leather guy to recover the new creation. ... That seems like a viable seat upgrade... too bad the guy never called back. I offered my email, but he declined and wanted a phone #... I'm pretty sure that approach does not result in more business.

I ordered the Mayer Seat Pad... and some highway pegs that I'm hoping will set up well on the frame. And the snow is melting...just a few more degrees needed on the thermometer to start using my new NC for my 180 mile round trip commute.

the Ergo is a good choice. I've come to like it more and more. I used to only put it on for really long rides, but I've learned to just leave it there all the time. If I were keeping it (and I may be if the Sargent seat disappoints), then I plan to secure it to the stock seat with a little more than the elastic ties it comes with. 'Not sure how yet, but I'll think of something.

I received the Ergo seat pad today. It seems to add a good two inches, which is appreciated (I'm 6'5" and feel a bit crunched.). I think I will like this addition...and I might even try the little seat mod at some point (to raise the front of the seat a bit.)
Thank you for the info...I might not have discovered this approach to improving the seat on my own.

If you mean me, then you're welcome. Let us know how your first long ride goes...

and at 5'11, I miss the seat pad's added height.... legs are a little more compressed now.

I used my Mayer seat pad yesterday for 150 miles (for a meeting). I would have continued for another 100 mile trip but it was a bit chilly (not quite 50 degrees).
I really liked the effects of the pad. It was comfortable, raises me about two inches (I requested as much height as I could) and helps with the slope of the NC seat. It lets me easily slide back and up for some different leg positions, sort of like the banana type seat on my dualsport.
It was a great purchase. Lots of miles to come.
