I would certainly not carry fuel in a container that someone would readily mistake for water. The risk of confusion would be too great; not for yourself maybe but for others. Like Lee said, I'd want proper construction and ventiliation of the container and stored in an open location ON the bike not IN it.

For those who are concerned about the safety of putting fuel in a container
not designed to hold fuel, google "portable fuel bladder". I saw hundreds of links
but didn't save them when I found the link to the dromedary bags.

The MSR bottles are designed to carry white gas which is just a more highly refined gasoline with no additives or dyes. Filled to the "full line" they are safe to store in an enclosed container.
