First of all, I think I owe you guys some NC700S porn

Freshly washed, waxed, and dried.

Alas, there is a light brown ring around the beginning of the exhaust. How do we stop this most evil of discolorations, or at least stop it in it's feet? :)

Not only that, being able to do it on a budget would be rather nice my fellows :)

Fighting the browning of stainless steel in a hot application is like fighting ants at a picnic. It is better to embrace the browning as a natural patina than to continually fight the inevitable. However, if you insist, the best product I have found is:

Bar Keepers Friend | Cleaning Products | Household Cleaning Supplies

It is an acidic product and is non-abrasive. Avoid abrasive cleaners (Comet, etc.) which will scratch the polished surface and alkaline products (like oven cleaners) which will cause permanent damage by pitting. In the pharmaceutical industry we use acids to clean stainless steels. The process is called passivation, which uncharacteristically for the pharma industry, is technically incorrect. Stainless steels are "stainless" because of the formation of a stable chromium oxide layer on the surface which impedes staining. Passivation only "cleans" the stainless surface so that a new stable oxide layer can naturally form. But chromium is not the only component of stainless steel. Other oxides (such as iron) can form under high heat. Depending on the heat level you can get browning, yellowing, rouging, or bluing of the stainless steel. In a stainless steel header you often see bluing at the port transitioning to browning and yellowing further down where the heats are lower. Rouging is generally reaction-caused and might happen if the hot stainless were in the presence of steam. This can happen to a hot pipe in the rain. Probably you just have heat-induced discoloration and not rouging.

The motorcycle specific product for this condition is Blue Away...

Blue Away Cleaner

It is mildly abrasive, but with matt finished vs. mirror finished steels, you won't see the scratches if you are random in your rubbing patterns.

But my advice is still to embrace it.

Blu Job! No, not blow job.

Remove blue patina from chrome exhaust pipes without scratching the chrome finish!

Chrome is used to plate motorcycle exhaust pipes because it protects well against rust, abrasion, and oil spray. And it looks great when it’s new. However, even the best chrome plating will turn blue under extreme temperatures, which are common in high performance engines and motorcycle exhaust systems. There are products out there that will lessen the blue patina, but they are abrasive and will eventually erode the shiny chrome finish. Before you settle for blue pipes, try Blue-Job Chrome Polish, formulated to remove the blue without scratching the chrome finish.

Honda favors stainless steel for exhaust systems and the shiny parts are simply polished stainless. It isn't really chrome so products made for cleaning chrome plated steel exhausts don't work or don't work very well on SS. This discoloration is natural and some like the patina but I am not one of them. It takes but a few minutes to remove it every few thousand miles and my experience with Honda is that the period between cleanings gets longer and longer. It might be 2000 or 3000 miles now but after a while it might be 10,000 or 20,000 miles between cleanings.

So true, Dave.

However, I do like my vehicles super clean, if possible. Nothing beats doing out in a clean, waxed, shiny and smooth-to-the-touch baby-arse finishing. Or yes, I can see my teeth in the finishing too. All teeth are real, still.
:p

I guess I'm old school because I'm old. Just ride it! It gives the bike "that serious" look. Shining is for cruiser!

Fully understandable. My feeling is if the weather is nice enough to go out and clean it then it's nice enough to go out and ride it..
If It's dry and I'm not working then it's out on the drive give the bikes a quick wash then decide on which one to take (I have to admit that for fun rides it's usually the Crossrunner) then hit the road

Yeah, I like to let my odometer speak for me while keeping the bike looking like a bar hopper or garage queen.
I have clocked 3500km so far in the last 4 months. That is more km than the last 2 years combined.Unfortunately, I am unable to clock more due to family commitments and so on. So when I am at YOUR age, dear friends, I will probably be clocking insanely like you too. :p Ride safe!

For me age has never been a consideration as I have always ridden whenever I can right from my 1st ride on my 16th birthday. I guess I have been lucky that all my girl friends (before my wife) and my wife have been bike enthusiasts. My son came pillion as soon as he was old enough to reach the footrests. never leave until tomorrow what you can do today for you might not have a tomorrow

That is a good philosophy. Live like you are dying, because you are.
I cannot view the youtube now, til later at home.Anyway, to live like there is no tomorrow is ONE way. Sometimes it can also be viewed as a very SELFISH (self-centered) way to live. We are brought up and live in different cultures and backgrounds, and we hence need to be diversity-sensitive too. I agree it works for some of you, but it is like poison to me and my family (right now). However, I do emphatise with this philosophy too. One gets more like this, when the years pile on. I am not being sarcastic to you or anyone here, I am just reflecting on myself and my life too. :p Enjoy your ride, your life and live as you wish. Allow also others to share what they do, how they live and encourage one another (even if they are different from you). Ride safe! :p

Some might not care for cowboy "hat acts" like McGraw, and I understand the cultural diversity of our audience, but some things it seems to me are universal. As far as it being selfish and self-centered, the video speaks of loving deeper, and forgiving, which I can't see as self-centered.

I live like there is no tomorrow, but I don't live like there is no eternity. I lost my only child when he was 23 years old and my father two months later. Now I sit in the middle and wonder why I was chosen to live on. But I am now fully aware of my own mortality and every day is a bonus day to spend with my wife and my grandson or to do a little unexpected good anonymously for a stranger. You see, the attitude of living like you are dying extends to living like those you love are dying too. After a loved one's death you get to wish you did more simple things with them and that you had cherished the time with them for what it really was - fleeting moments. I guess it is possible that this would be poison, but I really don't see how.

Dear Lee, I respect that. (BTW, I could not view the video now in office)I spend as much time as possible with my family. And that means NO MOTORCYCLE. :D Sorry my post may come across differently, but I think we are speaking about the same thing. People have different priorities in life. For me now, it is more family over "selfish" biking.

I understand, Happy. My wife, being the understanding soul that she is, seeks my happiness above her own (as I do hers). Sometimes she senses a restless spirit in me and says "I think you need to go on a long motorcycle ride." She has long known that I wanted to see Alaska by motorcycle and when I retired she urged me to do so. In preparation, the year before, I took her there on a tour and cruise so that we saw it together first. Those are the best memories we have of just the two of us. We had never seen a baby sled dog or stood in the cold spray of glacier melt.

We drove up to the famous Dalton Highway so I could get a look at the road surface. Hmmm, what kind of tires for this?

She knew that I wanted to do the trip by motorcycle as well as she knew that she did not. When I returned from the Alaska motorcycle trip she said that six weeks alone was hard on her and I pledged that I would not take so long a trip again. But "no motorcycles" wouldn't work for either of us. I couldn't stand it and she couldn't stand me. She understands that retirement means twice the husband on half the money, but I don't think she is prepared for All The Husband, All The Time.
