My NC was already the junior mistress in the barn since the 2004 BMW pre-dated it. She now has a new elderly stablemate. I have oft regretted selling my old BMW airhead and have just corrected that problem. I bought this 1976 R75/6 from a bud in Indianapolis to fill that empty place in my heart that only an airhead BMW can fill. I leave tomorrow AM to pick it up. She has quite a storied past, including being passed along by the widow of another friend who has passed away. I will treat it with dignity and use it for Sunday afternoon rides. No Iron Butt shenanigans or farkling. In fact, I will likely completely de-farkle it.

To get the bike you really want and have history with it.. very cool. Glad to hear your not going to mod it. Can already see you standing next to it at a motorcycle show..

An honorable way for her to retire. A bike like that deserves to be appreciated by someone who knows enough about her to give her the respect she deserves.

Her current name is Old Blue however all of my bikes have had names that started with "Lad" (my initials) or a phonetic "Lee". Also, the names have to mean something relative to the bike. My NC is named Lenita which means "mild". My 2004 BMW is named Leeta which means "journey". I named one old BMW Ladero (1992 R100RT) which is "a trusted friend that you can lean on". Probably the best motorcycle name ever. I've had a Leap Frog (1993 R100GS/PD), a Leona (1975 Gold Wing), a Lester (1977 R100RS), a LeAnn (a 2009 Yamaha TMax), and a Leanardo (1991 Honda ST1100). The list goes on.

So, we'll have to see if a new name fits or if she remains Old Blue in defiance of long-standing custom and precedent.

No, the Henry floorboards were on it. I am taking them off. I have had them before and ground the outside edges into knife blades. I just got home with it. My pre-purchase inspection reveals that the steering head bearings are notched; the clutch pull is hard and it engages late; and the left header pipe has a leak. Otherwise, it appears very sound. 37 years old and 44,000 miles. I believe it will be a fine old airhead.
 
Nice find Lee. I had a 1981 R100 for 6 years and sold it to buy the NC. I miss the thought of having it because it was fine example of the /7 and I went through every part of the bike while I owned it and trusted it to ride anywhere.

Roger that. After I get through with the maintenance. I'll have to pull the front end off to do the steering head bearings. While the forks are off, I will change the suspension fluid, check the seals, and change the brake fluid. The tranny could be as simple as a cable, but I am expecting to have to pull the tranny and put the Mark 1 eyeballs on the pressure plate. While in there I will lube the clutch splines. Not sure what the header pipe leak is yet - a burn through or just reassembling the clamps and torquing the massive finned nut. I'll also check valves, other fluids, and the rear suspension pivots. Happy, happy, hoppy, skippy, joy, joy. These things require a bit of dedication when compared to the low fiddling on the Honda.

Old hat, all of that. I can do it in my sleep.
 
A few pics of Old Blue. I decided to let a local Airhead BMW specialist shop do the work for me because my backlog is too long. I still have not done the service on my 2004 BMW after its Alaska trip. Too much personal downtime recently.
