Having a Technical Day in Northern Illinois

Well, due to weather we didn't have it this weekend. So it will be held next weekend. So I worked on my CBR 1100XX instead. Fixed the cruise control and figured out why my voltmeter was not working and my power source too.

Sure, be glad for you to drive on over and visit. I am about 45 minutes from maple park. Just north of Byron, Illinois. Head toward the cooling towers.

Afan got here at 5 PM. He stopped by the local Honda Shop on his way to pick up the air filter that I ordered for him. $35.
We started by bleeding his front brakes. I was telling him not to let the level get to low or else you will suck air in and it will be a bigger, longer job. About a minute later suuuuuckkk! He learned where to low was. We finally got that bled and since he has a DCT with abs we bled the rear caliper and the front caliper middle piston too. Wrapping each bleeder with a little teflon tape to prevent suckiing air in through the threads. By the time we got done doing that it was time to eat some hand pattied burgers fresh off the grill along with some corn and beans with accoutrements. After dinner back out to the garage we went.
Now what do you want to do? Air filter! Ok, go look at the book and see what you have to do. We got on it with Afan reading and doing with me helping along the way. Filter didn't look to bad for 20,000 miles... until you placed it next to the new one. As we were putting everything back together I stopped and asked if he wanted to clean up some wiring for his two power sources. We rerouted them and zip tied the excess out of the way behind the faux tank. I happened to have some extra rubber gasket for a handle bar mounted power source that I won't use so we used that to get his power source tight on the bars so it wouldn't rotate. Then I asked Afan if he trusted me???? He had a lot of faith in me as I stood there with a drill in my hand! I drilled a hole through the side of his Frunk and put a power source into his frunk. Just the standard type to plug in a battery charger. He has some attachments for it but they will be safely in the trunk now. Also showed him where to put in a cigarette lighter power source and how to do it. (Powerlet brand as they are tight and hold in your charging adapter)I had an extra rubber grommet and put that in then put his power source through it. Then we drained the coolant and took the radiator off and by this time his engine was ambient temperature so we proceeded to do the valves. He rotated the engine and I coached him on how to line everything up as in the book. I showed him how on the first intake and then he did all the rest. All were within spec. Some were In the + or - .001 range but still good. He was satisfied with that. We got all that put back together and then filled it up with coolant and let it heat up and then I showed him how to tell that his thermostat was opening up and started blipping the throttle. About 20 minutes all the air was out and the overflow bottle was filled to the top line and we called it a night at 0129 am. Didn't take as many pics as I wanted to... one thing is for sure. Afan has fallen in love with my Derek Weaver lift! Tomorrow after breakfast we are going to be cleaning and adjusting his chain.
Talked to him about aftermarket suspension mods. Even just front springs and that he needs to change out the fork oil. 20,000 miles and he doesn't know if the PO ever did it. Showed him where a few other things were on the bike too. All in all a good evening's/night's work!

Some more... and I even taught him how to reset those plastic rivet things without breaking them. Took about four different times but he got it! Those can be a pain if you don't know how to deal with them. pics

you're looking at the drain bolt just to the right of the overflow canister. By this time overflow tank removed emptied and rinsed then replaced.

that tube hangingdown is the crankcase breather tube. It needs to be drained and it is convenient to do this during valve checks. Afan is doing his first valve lash check in his life! Feeler gauge sliding in. He is learning what loose or dragging is like.

all done and everything back together and filling up the coolant system. We burped the air out and when we shut it off we filled up the radiator completely and put the cap on then filled the overflow tank up to the high line. Next morning we looked and the overflow tank was on the low line but the radiator was full. We topped off the overflow tank.

Afan getting ready to go and heading out. He is going to be taking his time to go 4 hrs home. Today and tomorrow! We cleaned and checked his chain. It was perfectly adjusted
I still showed him how to use his motion pro chain alignment tool and went through how to adjust the chain. We cleaned it and lubed it and he packed and we said our goodbyes. A new friend made... and already planning on his next visit... we'll be going through his forks.

the only downer of this garage time was when Afan had packed and was within seconds of leavng when he wanted to open the Frunk. It wouldn't open! I know we put it together correctly and snapped the cable in the holder so it wouldn't pop out. You could feel resistance when the key was turned but no latch movement. I told him I had to go to my grand daughters 1st birthday and if he wanted to come it would be no problem and we can figure out how to open it and see what went wrong. Afan was so nice and said he didn't want to intrude. He took off but it bothered me so I did some searching and I believe I found out what probably went wrong. Here is a link to a post I found. I think I know how to gt into the frunk when it won't open. It will take some patience but it can be done. So hurry back Afan and we will tackle your frunk and your forks. I highly recommend a spring change while we are in the forks. There are several sites that you can go to and do research. I'll bet there is plenty of material on this Forum too.

I would suspect that same part is wearing on your daughters NC as the latch was resisting opening

I'm sorry for not posting anything after the Tech Meet at Guy's - some important things I had to address first, just came up.

So... First off, I have to thank to Guy and his family for welcoming me with open arms. I really felt great. And I hope I didn't cause any trouble for Guy being late a bit on his granddaughter's 1st birthday.

I really don't have to add anything after Guy's description of the event. I learned a lot, and we did the great job with changes, maintenance and checkings on my bike. And, Guy forgot to mention that I fell in love in his bike lift. If you're over 50, and you like to work on your bike/ATV - this is something you MUST have. I'm pretty sure if we had to work on my bike while on the ground, it will take at least 3x more time. And 5x more pain. And 10x more Ibuprofen. :D

Here are some of the pictures I took...

On my way home I took Lincoln Highway in Rochelle, IL, and then via Ashton, Franklin Grove, Dixon, Sterling, Morrison to Fulton. Crossed Mississippi At Fulton, IL/Clinton, IA and continued on Lincoln Highway too Marshalltown. Then took south to Des Moines. The National Headquarters of the Lincoln Highway and museum in Franklin Grove was open but I was really short in time and such a shame I didn't visit it. next time, I promise! :D

Guy, regarding the frunk, I'll not be able to get back to your garage at least 2 weeks (maybe even more than a month). So, if you (or anybody else) have an idea how to open locked frunk, please let me know. I have to try by myself. On June 13 I'm leaving for LOCSTOC and Barrrel XI, Spring Green, WI and it wouldn't be smart to ride around with the registration and insurance papers locked in the frunk. :D
