We're dealing a petroleum based product here that hardens with age. Motorcycle tires for example are considered too hard after 5 years to be used safely.
Helmets fall into this very common category and thus are probably not as effective in protection after 5 years as a 'fresh' unit. The protective liner will not absorbs an impact as well.
Warranties on products are time sensitive more so than mileage sensitive. Our NC has a minimal 12 month warranty for that very reason.
