After my 2014's 2020-Thanksgiving Day encounter with a deer (https://www.nc700-forum.com/threads/deer-damage.18171/) I keep finding more previously unnoticed damage.
Trying to salvage the right (as one is seated on the bike) Givi handguard, I found the 6mm screw provided with the handguard would not secure the bar end to the handlebar; it could be pulled right out. Before investigating further, I found some 6mm threaded stock at my great local ACE hardware store, carved a screwdriver slot in the end, and found it was plenty long enough to encounter threads inside the handlebar. BUT... it would not keep the bar end from rotating and, therefore, the outer end of the Givi handguard from hanging down.
The parts diagram from Partzilla's handlebar page didn't look familiar (several small things I didn't recognize), but here's a photo of the right bar end. It has a semicircular lip that complements a similar lip on the piece into which the 6mm bolt screws, and I presume that's what is supposed to keep the bar end from rotating. But my internal piece, as the photo shows, is broken:
Here's my little drawing of what I think is going on, with the undamaged left for comparison:
It seems as if the Givi screw only makes it (on the right) to the piece that broke off, while my homemade 6mm-threaded-stock piece is long enough to reach the main body of... whatever that is, a weight?
Any suggestions? I think all I really need to do is to prevent that right bar end from rotating, so it will support the outer end of the Givi handguard. I bought a couple of rubber stoppers at the hardware store, a tight fit into the handlebar, and am considering putting a washer and nut behind them to make an expansion plug; I think it only has to be secure enough to prevent the handguard from swinging down. (The hardware store had some nice professional expansion plugs, but their smallest, 1", was too large to fit in the handlebar.)
