Check your chain

I visited the dealer today to have my drive-chain inspected per the recall notice. It was a bit of a wet ride, but I didn't have anywhere else to go but home afterwards. The commute was short, and in about 20 mins I was out of there and on my way back home. No replacement necessary. So then I hopped in the car and went shopping for parts to add some more red in the rear... Posted in Mods..

I hope the rest of the NC700 team are faring well with the drive-chain recall

Picked up my new bike this morning, peered at chain, Ack! the dreaded RK is printed on it! Drat! :worry: hahaha

Dealer has no chains in stock (I thought this was a bit odd, but maybe all their in-stock chains are from the same bad batch (lol)) or perhaps they have to go through some complicated Honda paperwork procedure or something) and let me leave with it as is. They said they will call me when the replacement chain is available.

They weren't supposed to deliver a bike with the bad chain.

That's what I said to them, lol.

"Stop-Sell" or some such appellation, until the effected machines dealt with. They seemed unconcerned, though.

I won't be going anywhere far or fast for the next week or so anyway, so I, too, am willing to chance it.

I took my bike in for the chain inspection last week. I had the "DID Japan" chain, so I assumed everything was ok. When I picked the bike up, there was an item on the invoice for $130 for the chain. Are they replacing chains whether you need one or not? Or was our info on the "DID Japan" being ok an error? No biggy to me, just curious.

Which dealership did you take it to?

They didn't charge you, did they? The DID Japan chains were the good ones, and shouldn't have needed changed. No harm done really if they did change it, but it should have been done under warranty -- no charge.

I would be pissed if they charged me for a new chain, when nothing was wrong with the original. They will probably want to replace the tires next time.

No, there was no charge to me. I just wondered why they changed it if it didn't need a new one.

Assuming Honda doesn't require proof of the type of chain identified on the inspected bike, it sounds like your dealer just made a quick buck off of mother Honda by claiming labor reimbursement for the recall.

I'm curious if they actually replaced the chain at all, or just billed Honda for one... Does the new chain look brand new Michael?

I'd ask for the money back or threaten to write to Honda for their knowledge, plus repeat this story to as many people locally as possible.
They cannot and should not charge you for a chain change unless you asked them to.
