The stock exhaust was one of the few things about this bike I actually disliked. It was far too quiet and wheezy. I like to hear a motors exhaust. Not all the whiring and spinning. When I ride with other bikes I couldn't hear my bike at all. Maybe I am old fashioned...or just plain old....but...

In case any finds themselves with the same requirements in the future: I got the Kuryakin adaptor part #8844. It was a perfect match but for the pin hole size. I am sure with another try I could have nailed the exact adaptor, but just decided to bore the 1/4" pin hole out to the required 5/16"...

Great stuff. You are lucky to be close at hand. A friend and I did that road a few years ago.....then went on to ride every summit we could find in WA, and Oregon. It was a grand trip.

What mpgandfun said....sand / oil / a little deisel is likely the culprit. Another possibility is these little tar repairs the road guys do on cracks in the road. Every region does their repairs different I am sure. But in the last few years around here they use this gooey rubberry/tar mix on...
