2016: What did you do to/with your NC700 today?

(this is a week late) On May 17th I rode my 1 week old NC700XD up to Georgetown, TX from Austin to support legislation that will hopefully help put an end to profiling of motorcycle riders in Texas. Met up with quite a few interesting riders, and I'm pretty sure I was one of the few non-harley riders who showed up at the press conference.

I rode this 230km loop and arrived home well after dark. In future I must plan to return earlier, these back roads are dangerous enough in daylight. Deer, racoons, skunks and who knows what else...at least there are no Buffalo around here!

Nice sunset as I start to head home.

I went for a long 400km ride with the NC today to visit and test ride another small bike... finally they are now sisters ! I bought an 88' NX250...another famous Honda bike.

Oh man, that's a blast from the past. I'd buy one of those in a heartbeat if I could find one in pristine condition. I remember lusting after an NX when they first came out. I don't consider myself proficient enough to ride my NC700 off-road. It's just too big and heavy for my current level of off-road riding competence. I think something the size of the NX250 would be ideal.

Craigslist here I come!

On a side note I have heard of an off road school that does some work out of Fort Collins. I hope to go there one day...one day....

Yesterday I cleaned, lubed and waxed the chain with Maxima products and a Grunge brush.

Today there were lots of scattered thunderstorms, so I donned all the Gortex shells over my armor and headed toward the black clouds to wash the bike, but no such luck, so I went and got a burger instead.

After that, went for a moonlight ride at 1am down random 55mph country roads to test out the lights and high beam.

I can do about 50mph before I'm righting past my lights. The OEM high beam is actually pretty good, but it could be better.

Have a set of Denali DX coming tomorrow and the new Honda lightbar on order from BikeBandit but who knows when that'll get here.

Oh and I passed the 500 mile mark. That first service is coming up soon!

I played around with some of the dash settings. Here's a video showing the colors on the rev bar and other stuff:

Oh yeah, topped up fuel again. Spend most of my time in D mode. Fuelly says MPG is now around 71.1

At only 500 miles on your bike, this seems excessive. I realize this is unsolicited advice, but overzealous cleaning, especially with a grunge brush, can lead to a very short chain life. See this thread: http://nc700-forum.com/forum/garage-mechanical-help/7500-maybe-i-just-have-bad-luck-drive-chains.html

Again, sorry to intrude on your post, but it made my eyebrows go up.

Oh wow I didn't know that. Figured every 500 miles or so. I'll use a regular tooth brush. From the dealer it had this whitish paste on it, looked like lithium grease but who knows. This attracted all sorts of dust from my garage and looked nasty so I got a proper lube and wax on it. The chain was a bit tight 30mm but I'm not touching that until I've got a chain alignment tool. Today I registered for the MSF Advanced Rider Course!

I've begun adding some of the electrical bits:

I replaced the stock lead acid with a Deltran Battery Tender Lithium battery. This battery is small and allows more space in the battery box for other things. It also has two sets of + and - terminals. On the first set I wired the bikes regular connectors and nothing else. On the second set I wired fused Powerlet Termin8 pigtail leads. Those provide a set of four screw terminals for attaching directly to the battery;

On one of these terminals I ran an SAE connector out the left side of the bike for charging. The remaining terminals will be used for lights, alarm system, and power to a PDM60 I stuck in the toolkit area. Drilled the panel a bit for the wires. I'll be putting another hole in the back to accommodate the programming cable.

In front of the battery I put my display unit for the camera system:

I made a mounting bracket to position the front camera using one of the windshield bolts. It mounts like this: (The paint on the bracket is drying)

I'm still waiting for a few more electrical items before take off the plastics and wire it all up for good.

Went on my second ride this year of about 150 miles. Met up with a few others that braved the rain to cheer on and hand out beads as the participants entered for the starting ceremony of the Arkansas Special Olympics.

We met at Sunrise Honda where I got to see but not set on, it was sold, a silver African Twin DCT. The rain started coming down pretty good as we got ready

We had a police escort to Harding University. Normally there is a large parade of bikes but the storms apparently kept most everyone home. we only had 15 bikes show up.

Normally there is two lines of bikes and the participants walk between as we cheer them on and hand out beads. Because of the weather they only paraded between he closest building and the gym we parked the bikes and walked over to them.

We got a bit wet but it was so worth it to see their smiling faces, yell and make up cheers for them, and get lots of high fives

Which battery did you get? That is pretty slick having 2 sets of terminals.

I got this set:

Amazon.com: Battery Tender BTL14A240C Lithium Iron Phosphate Battery: Automotive

This battery is small and I had to use some foam cushions on the bottom and one side (it comes with them) to prevent the battery from bouncing around in the battery box. 100 mile test ride over bumpy roads last night and all is fine.

Could probably but in one of the two bigger ones (360C and 480C) but I'm not sure on the measurements. I just went with the cheapest one that provide the same or more 'power' as the stock battery.

I really got it just so I could have more space for my stuff in there, plus the extra terminals, the chemistry is just a bonus. I am aware of 'cold starting' but even with it's 'warehouse' partial charge it had no problems turning over the motor at 12.3v.

It's at 13 something when fully charged. I also bought the battery tender voltage monitor and USB adapter that hooks up to the SAE connector.
